Sharon Gail Royal

Gail is survived by her daughter, Jamie McCandless; grandson, Caleb McCandless; sister, Carolyn Royal; brother, David Royal (Karen); and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reuel and Willowdean Royal; her brother, Reuel “Sonny” Royal Jr.; and her nephew, Charles “Chip” Royal.

It would be hard to find a more hardworking and “good and faithful” servant than Gail. While living in Montgomery, she was an active member of Eastmont Baptist Church, where she loved serving in the choir and handbell ensemble. After moving to Birmingham, she joined Valleydale Baptist Church and quickly became involved in the choir.

Gail was always ready to give her time, talents, and resources whenever she heard of a need. She generously opened her establishment to support local fundraisers benefiting organizations such as the Sunshine Center, Brantwood Children’s home, church mission groups, and countless individuals in the community.

Gail also served on the board of the Sunshine Center and was a proud member of the Kiwanis Club where she became well known and loved for the delicious breakfast she served every Thursday morning.

Her accomplishments in the food industry were numerous. Gail was recognized for outstanding achievements in the industry, receiving the National Restaurant Association Award in Washington, D.C., as well as a James Beard Award. She was also an active and dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Above all, Gail will be remembered as a devoted mother and Gigi, a woman of unwavering faith, a loyal friend, and someone whose love for her family and community was evident in all she did. She possessed a true servant’s heart and never hesitated to lend a helping hand.

Gail’s influence reached far beyond the doors of Gail’s Down the Street Cafe. Through her generosity, faith, hard work, and genuine kindness, she touched countless lives. Her warm smile, welcoming spirit, and willingness to help others will not be forgotten. Her legacy will live on through the many people she loved, served, and inspired.
