August 25, 1923 - March 21, 2018
On March 21, 2018, Stan’s guardian angel joyously welcomed him into the eternal home of our Lord Jesus.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Mae “Jinx” Barry Jenkins, his parents, John V. and Velma Jenkins, his brother, J.V. Jenkins, Jr., an infant daughter, Barbara Gail Jenkins and his grandson, Andrew McConnell.
Stan is survived by his son, Stanley “Stan” Todd Jenkins, Sr. (Beryl) of Navarre, FL, and two daughters, Janet “Jill” Jenkins Sherman (Eric) of Enterprise, AL and Jennifer Jenkins McConnell (Forrest) of Montgomery, AL.
He also is survived by his cherished 12 grandchildren, S. Todd Jenkins, Jr., Donald C. Jenkins (Heather), Stephanie Jenkins Hegeman (Joel), Leigh Jenkins Mains (Jeff), Joshua A. Jenkins, Laleña Jenkins Pollitt (Chris), Jenifer Thayer, Steven Thayer, Jennifer Sherman Weeks (Stan), Julianne Sherman, Jamie Sherman Wyatt (Luke), and Forrest McConnell IV (Julie); 16 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Stan was born on August 25, 1923 and reared in Montgomery, AL, where he attended school at Forest Avenue, Cloverdale and Lanier. He was hired by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in 1942 and, later that year, studied pre-engineering at Alabama Polytech Institute (Auburn University). Upon acceptance for Army basic training at Keesler Army Air Field, he married his longtime girlfriend, Ethel Barry, in a military wedding there.
Stan proudly served in the U.S. military for 25 years, during which he had assignments in numerous U.S. states, Japan, the Azores and Johnston Island and flew B-17 (air-sea rescue), B-24, C-45, C-47 and SA-16 Grumman Albatross (amphibian) aircraft. He served 11 of the last 12 years of his military service at Maxwell Air Force Base (Air University) and Gunter Air Force Station (Hq. 14th Air Force). Following his Air Force career, Stan worked for 10 years as an administrator at the State of Alabama Department of Mental Health.
Stan embodied the qualities of the Greatest Generation. He was humble, loyal and patriotic, always displaying honor, duty and faith in God and country. Nicknamed “Hotshot” by his grandchildren, he was a witty storyteller with a love of creative, sometimes awful, puns. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Stan loved his family, friends, and Dalraida United Methodist Church, where he and Jinx were longtime members and supported various youth programs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dalraida UMC Youth Missions or to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, March 26 at Dalraida United Methodist Church, 3817 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, AL, with the Rev. Michael Cobb officiating. Interment will take place in the church garden. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service.
