

NELSON, Thelma Colston, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, died unexpectedly June 4, 2011 at age 91 after surgery. Born in LaGrange, Georgia in 1920 but moved to Montgomery where she has been a lifelong resident. She was enrolled in religion courses for 2 yrs at Howard College in the early 60's, along with her husband, Leonard who was the registrar. Her love and gift was teaching, singing to, and working with 5year olds in Sunday School for 58 years. She taught Mission Friends, Sunbeams, Training Union & Vacation Bible School. She and Leonard also went to the Faith Rescue Mission to teach Bible studies. She was the co-owner of Leonard Nelson Used Cars for over 15 years. She was active in Montgomery Public Schools PTA, Bellehurst Garden Club, an honorary Alpha Gamma Delta alum at AUM, helped with Montgomery County Jr. Miss Programs, actively involved with her daughter's activities such as dance, cheer, music and choir. Thelma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leonard Nelson. She is survived by her daughters Nancy Nelson Lee (Jimmy), and Tonya Nelson Speed (Butch), grand- daughters Anne Preston & Frances Speed; her sister Irene Baker, and two stepsons Buddy Nelson (Ginny) of Pine Mountain, GA and J.W. Nelson (Nicky) of Lebanon, TN. Serving as pallbearers will be Bart Eddins, Ken Longcrier, Joe Bruner, Bill Struthers, Chris Green, Rudy Martinez, & Davey Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be all the many children that she has taught throughout her life. Funeral service will be Wednesday June 8, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday June 7, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Dr. Rick Marshall & Rev. Larry Armstrong will be officiating. Thelma had a special love and devotion to children and it was evident in all aspects of her Godly life. Memorials may be made to Eastern Hills Baptist Church Children's Ministry.
