Vela Ree Scott, a resident of Montgomery, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021. She had sustained serious injuries from a fall at her residence and died peacefully in her sleep at Charlton Place Health Care Center in Deatsville, AL.
Born in McKenzie, AL on July 18, 1929, Vela was the eldest daughter of J.W. and Phenie Scott. Vela became a Registered Nurse and throughout her nursing career in Montgomery, she worked in challenging positions treating the seriously injured, such as an emergency room nurse at St. Margaret’s Hospital and an industrial health nurse at the Brockway Glass factory. Hired by the Veterans Administration Regional Office as an occupational health nurse, she worked there until her retirement from Civil Service in 1992.
She married James M. Scott, a native of Patsburg, AL, in 1957 and together raised two children, Jacqueline and Vernon, in Montgomery. As busy as she was as a mother, wife, and full-time professional nurse, she still found time to volunteer as a Cub Scout troop leader and was a faithful member of Dalraida Baptist Church for more than 50 years. After their retirement, both James and Vela were devoted grandparents to Laura Leigh, Goodwin, and Franklin Scott.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three of her brothers (Wilfred, Alfred, and Leslie Scott). She is survived by her sisters, Jean Johnson and Margaret Hewlett, her brother Shannon Scott, her children and their spouses (Marc Romanych and Diane Scott), her grandchildren, and her great granddaughter, Isla James Churnside (daughter of Laura Leigh and her husband, Alex Churnside).
Vela's memorial service will be at Dalraida Baptist Church, 3838 Wares Ferry Road, Montgomery, AL 36109, on Friday, Nov. 5. Visitation with the family begins at 10:00 am with the Celebration of Life service following at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in her memory to Dalraida Baptist Church. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Leak-MC.com for the Scott family.
