At the age of 18, he enlisted in the US Air Force where he became an air traffic controller. One of his first assignments was in Brize Norton, England. There he met and married Mary Catherine Murphy on July 4, 1953. During his 20 years of service he was stationed in Columbus, Ohio; Rome, New York; Casablanca, Morocco; Newburgh, New York; The Azores; Panama City, Florida; Saigon, Vietnam where he received a Purple Heart then retired from the service at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Mac then moved to Montgomery, Alabama, and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for the next 18 years. He was in real estate for 3 years but his real passion was dabbling in antiques and collectibles. He loved this hobby for the rest of his life. He enjoyed a few other hobbies too such as golfing, square dancing, bowling, and cheering for the Auburn Tigers. Mac cherished his family and his beloved dog, Duffy, more than anything else in the world. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Kathy; his children, Beverly Espy (Darby), Andrew McUmber (Diana), Kelly Simmons (Malcolm), Julie Rookis; his grandchildren, Brian Espy (Kristy), Katherine Webb (Eric), David Espy (Rebekah), Drew Simmons (Sydney), Parker Simmons (Mary Erwin), Tyler Simmons, Ryan Rookis, Luke Rookis, Mary Katherine Rookis; as well as 5 great grandchildren, Madeline Espy, John Espy, Patrick Espy, Darby Ann Webb, Everly Espy. Survivors also include his siblings, Leon McUmber, Merlie McUmber, and Ida Eaton.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 6, 2020 at 11:00am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Montgomery and he will rest in peace at St. Margaret’s Cemetery, Montgomery.
