He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Joan Powell Truitt and his two children, William Edwin Truitt, Jr. and Marie Truitt Huber. Those left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Christian Huber (Nancy), Scott Huber (Carol), Adrian Huber (Virginia), Janice Huber (Maria). Survivors include great grandchildren Adrianna Huber, Alyssa Huber Antonaccio (Gianni), Kristin Huber, Celeste Huber and great, great granddaughter Ilya. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Diane O’Neil Truitt, with other nieces and nephews and cousins, who will miss his presence.
Ed was preceded in death by his younger brother, Samuel (Sam) Grady Truitt, Sr. (Diane) and their parents Martin Grady and Adel Marie Truitt. Also, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Rhonda Lynn Bodiford Truitt and his son-in-law, Walter Marec Huber.
Ed was born in Munford, Alabama and grew up in Oxford, Alabama. He served his country during WWII in the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. Upon honorable discharge, Ed began his educational career at the University of Alabama. There he was active member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity serving as the House Steward while preparing for his life’s work. Ed met the “love of his life” Dottie at Calvary Baptist Church. They married after 3 years of courtship.
Ed began his 36 years of service to the State of Alabama in the field of education as a teacher in Calhoun County. Ed received his Master Degree in 1965 from University of Alabama, number 1 in his class. He advanced to the role of guidance counselor before moving to Montgomery in 1967 to work with the Department of Education. These remaining 24 years, Ed would serve in the capacity of department secretary for the Alabama Administrative Procedure Act, as Department coordinator on the Council of Chief State School Officer’s Committee on Evaluation and Information Systems and as the Department’s communications coordinator. In addition to his work load he obtained his Doctor of Education from Auburn University in 1973. This completed his formal education of 25 years! Ed enjoyed the people he met and those in the future benefited from his wisdom and insight.
Ed loved the Lord and was a faithful servant all his life, using his many talents to help others see Jesus. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Montgomery for 54 years where he served as deacon and led many Sunday School lessons. He helped establish the First Baptist Foundation for scholarship funding providing a way for students to complete their education goals.
Upon retirement in 1993, Ed used his talents as the editor for the Rosemary Homeowner’s Association Newsletter. Ed volunteered as general editor for the computer manual and directed the Frank Tripp Computer Lab at First Baptist Church Montgomery for 11 years from 2004-2015, helping hundreds of folks improve their computer skills.
Visitation will be on Saturday May 8, 2021 at First Baptist Church Montgomery at 10:00 am with a service in Stakely Sanctuary at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Truitt Scholarship Fund through the First Baptist Foundation.
