Winston suffered a stroke in December of 2021 and lost the use of his left side. Due to this, he has been in a nursing home for almost four years and fought a good fight to the end.
Winston was born in Marengo County, Alabama, on October 20, 1934, to Henry Selton Stockman and Effie Martin. He was the sixth of 18 children.
Winston grew up on a farm and learned how to work hard. After graduating from High School, he joined the Army in 1955. He served for three years and spent time in Germany as a medic.
On January 20, 1959, he married the love of his life, Mittie Beasely Stockman from Highland Home, Crenshaw County, Alabama. They had one daughter, Sandra, in 1963.
He worked at Sears for 32 years as a salesman.
Winston had several hobbies, including beekeeping for nearly 50 years and gardening. He worked at the Atlanta and Birmingham temples along with his sweetheart for 18 years. He loved eating good southern vegetables, homemade ice cream, and especially Alabama Football. He enjoyed taking care of his lawn and mowing several widows' lawns around him.
He served as a Bishop for seven years for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Carter Hill Road in Montgomery. He also served for decades in many positions of leadership.
Winston was remembered for his smile, telling jokes to make people laugh and brighten their day. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all those he met. He was a good friend and a true disciple of Jesus Christ, always helping and serving those around him. He was faithful to the end, had a strong testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and exemplified that in his everyday life.
He was never timid about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone he met. He was a devoted brother, husband, and friend, along with being a proud father and grandfather.
He blessed many lives in his 90 years. We’re very, very grateful for the very tender loving care he showed for Mittie when she contracted Parkinson’s. He never left her side. She was the love of his life for 62 years, and now he is right by her side once again.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Stockman Vaughn (and her husband Kent Vaughn), his three grandchildren Elyse (Jhoffer), Kimball (Felicity), Hunter, his two great grandchildren Maverick and Grace, his brothers, James "Buddy" Stockman, and David Stockman; sisters, Janie Hawks and Linda Ward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Selton and Effie Martin Stockman, and his brothers Henry Lee, Bennie, John Ivan, Jerry Dale, Henry Selton Stockman Jr. and sisters Joan, Betty Jean, Betty Louise, Annie Grace, Judy Ann, Juliette, and Bess.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 26th at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9385 Park Crossing, Montgomery, AL 36117. Visitation will be held at the church at noon. Burial will occur in the Alabama National Cemetery the following week. To offer online condolences, visit www.Leak-MC.com
