
Dr. Woodward Durham Lamar, Montgomery native and well-known dentist, passed away February 24, with his loved ones in attendance. He was 99 years of ageless.
A graduate of Sidney Lanier High School, the University of Alabama and the UAB School of Dentistry, Lamar delayed his college education to serve as a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II. The war ended as his squadron was headed for Japan. During his life he trained many a good bird dog, played a decent round of golf (though he preferred fishing) and served as president of the Alabama Dental Association. His beloved wife of 49 years, May Rush Lamar, preceded him in death, as did his sister, Amelia, and five brothers, Robert, Leonard, Claude, Bill and Wardlaw.
He is survived by two sons: Woodward Durham Lamar, Jr. and his wife, Susan, and James Claude Lamar and his wife, Debbie; two daughters: Melissa Lamar Sutherland and her husband, John, and May Lamar Donnell and her husband, Richard; Nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dr. Jay Wolf will conduct a graveside service Sunday, February 27 at 2:30 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Donnell home Saturday from 3 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Richard Jay Donnell, Jr., James Harvey Farrior III, Alexander Davenport Hassell, Thomas Owen Harris, Armstead Lester Hayes, IV and William Chancellor Young.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Poundstone Class at First Baptist Church, of which Lamar was a founding member.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 305 So. Perry St., Montgomery, AL 36104.
