Antoni Potocki

Quatre mois se sont écoulés depuis la célébration des cent ans d'Antoni Potocki (né le 26 septembre 1924), qui s'est éteint paisiblement dans son sommeil le mercredi 15 janvier 2025. Nous confions aujourd'hui son âme à la main divine du Seigneur.

Antoni est né à Cracovie, en Pologne, alors que le pays vivait une période de renouveau national. Sa jeunesse heureuse fut interrompue et marquée par la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1944, il s'engagea dans la résistance polonaise (Armia Krajowa) sous l’occupation allemande. L'avènement du communisme l'obligea à émigrer, d'abord au Brésil, où il résida 16 ans et se maria. En 1963, Antoni et sa jeune famille partirent pour le Canada, où il vécut jusqu'à la fin de ses jours.

Influencé dès l'enfance par les valeurs familiales, Antoni manifestait un grand attachement à sa patrie et une profonde révérence pour la devise de l’armée polonaise : « Dieu, Honneur et Patrie » (Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna), qui l'a accompagné tout au long de sa vie. Sensible à la belle musique, à la littérature et à l'histoire, Antoni aimait chanter, réciter ou raconter des histoires de son vécu. Il avait le don de détendre l'atmosphère grâce à son sens de l'humour. Il se distinguait par sa droiture, son intégrité, son courage, son romantisme, sa bienveillance à l’égard de son prochain, ainsi que par sa sensibilité à la beauté, caractéristiques d'un véritable gentleman. Par ailleurs, la géographie et la faune étaient des sujets qui l'intéressaient beaucoup, et son goût pour l'aventure l'amena à concrétiser son rêve de jeunesse : voyager dans les régions les plus reculées du globe. Avec le temps, son intérêt se redirigea vers d'autres domaines, notamment les échecs et le sport.

Il laisse aujourd’hui dans le deuil son épouse Elżbieta (née Radziwiłł), ses cinq enfants, Inès (John O’Rourke), Marguerite (Stanisław Porowski), Jan (Izabela Potocka), Izabela (Krzysztof Morawski), Stefan (Kasia Kwiatkowska) et ses dix petits-enfants, Alexander, Anthony, Helena, Constantin, Mateusz, Patryk, Christian, Isabelle, Diana et Adam, et quatre arrière-petits-enfants, Mila, Essenia, Vincent et Leonardo.

Almost four months have passed since the 100th birthday of Antoni Potocki (born September 26,1924), who died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday January 15, 2025. Today we entrust his soul to the divine hand of the Lord.

Antoni was born in Krakow, Poland, at a time when the country was experiencing a period of national renewal. His happy youth was interrupted and marked by the Second World War. In 1944, he joined the Polish resistance (Armia Krajowa) under the German occupation. The advent of communism forced him to emigrate, first to Brazil, where he lived for 16 years and where he got married. In 1963, Antoni and his young family moved to Canada where he lived for the remainder of his life.

Influenced from childhood by family values, Antoni had a deep attachment to his homeland and a profound reverence for the motto of the Polish army: ‘God, Honour and Fatherland’ (Bóg, Honor, Ojczyzna), which stayed with him throughout his life. A lover of beautiful music, literature and history, Antoni loved to sing, recite or tell stories from his past. He had a gift for lightening the mood with his sense of humour. He stood out for his uprightness, integrity, courage, romanticism, kindness to others and sensitivity to beauty, the hallmarks of a true gentleman. Geography and wildlife were also subjects that undoubtedly interested him, and his taste for adventure led him to realize his youthful dream of travelling to the remotest parts of the globe. Over time, his interests were redirected towards other areas, notably chess and sport.

He is survived by his wife Elżbieta (born Radziwiłł), his five children, Inès (John O'Rourke), Marguerite (Stanisław Porowski), Jan (Izabela Potocka), Izabela (Krzysztof Morawski), Stefan (Kasia Kwiatkowska) and his ten grandchildren, Alexander, Anthony, Helena, Constantin, Mateusz, Patryk, Christian, Isabelle, Diana and Adam, and four great-grandchildren, Mila, Essenia, Vincent and Leonardo.
