Arthur was born on March 25, 1932, to Irish-born Bridget Broes (née Murphy) and Belgian-born Lambert Louis Broes at Harlem Hospital, New York City.
He received a B.A. from Manhattan College in 1954 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in English Literature at Columbia University. Afterward, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy, where he served for two years as a journalist and photographer.
He first taught at Carnegie Mellon University as an English Professor, where he received an Andrew Mellon Fellowship to the University of Pittsburgh where he completed his Phd in 1970. He then taught at Temple University for two years until moving to Montréal, in 1967 with his wife Nona, upon receiving a Tenured track position at Loyola College (now Concordia University), where he taught until he retired in 1997. Throughout his career he published many articles on Chaucer, Joyce, Hawthorne as well as political cartoons and movies.
After his retirement, Arthur spent his time travelling to Europe, the US and throughout Canada with his wife Nona, visiting his family in White Plains, working out at the YMCA, and pursuing his many passions (and speaking about them extensively to anyone he meets): baseball, literature, comics, history and classic movies. He was also known to spend many hours at his desk and in the library working on memoirs of his life in relation to historical events.
Arthur was predeceased by his brother Lambert and sister Helen. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nona (née Mellody), daughter Elizabeth (husband Matthew and step grandson Henry), and son Peter (wife Karina and two grandchildren Lucas and Emilia). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
