My Dearest Carmela,

I had the pleasure of knowing you for such a short while. But in the few years that we shared as neighbours I came to know you as a beautiful kind and generous soul. You were so full of warmth and compassion and forgiveness - you always saw the good in people. I admire you for that and for the boundless love for you had for your children and grandchildren. Seeing how your face lit up whenever they were near was a beautiful sight. I was happy for you to be able to find joy when life had dealt you such blows, first with the loss of your precious daughter, and then with this tremendous battle. A battle you fought so valiantly and with such grace. You never, ever, complained, Carmela. In your example, there is an important lesson fo us all. You have taught me a lot, my dear friend, I am heartbroken that you have been taken from us, and I take comfort in knowing that you are now reunited with your beautiful daughter who was also taken much too soon. I will forever cherish the evenings spent on your front porch talking and laughing. You had a great laugh. In fact, I hear it now as I write this note to you.
