Carolyn Starr Halfkenny (Downing)

December 11, 1943June 8, 2020

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,

I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:

2 Timothy 4:7-9 (KJV)

Carolyn Starr Halfkenny (Downing), 76, of Montreal, QC, affectionately called “Starr” was a loving daughter, predeceased by Clinton Halfkenny (Father) and Eleanor Ashe Halfkenny (Mother). She was a sister, cousin, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend she departed this life to be with Lord on June 8, 2020. She was born in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Starr was a graduate of Congrégation de Notre-Dame - Notre Dame Secretarial College obtaining her Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC). She later than retired from the same warmly known as “The Mother House” some 25 years later.

In the community, Starr was one that was full of life and joy. You could always find her helping others whenever called on. She would give you her last. She was a strong silent soul, who was continually active in the Cote des Neige Community Center in the 70’s. At that time, the center was attempting to help and mentor the up and coming youth with the assistance of a book titled “The Me Nobody Knows: Children's Voices from the Ghetto, (Stephen M. Joseph)”. Her community efforts did not stop there as in her retirement she relocated home to Truro NS, and continued these community efforts within her local church Zion United Baptist Church, she was a faithful member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Starr also worked with Eastlink Community TV, where she did community and TV announcements.

Starr leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter: Rev. Toni V. Mayes (Downing), (Rev. Jay Mayes). Tobias Odel Downing-Ramage (Grandson), Toronto ON. Her siblings, Clinton James, Courtenay BC, Arron Charles , Montreal, QC, Sheila Marie (Donald Souter) Cornwall, ON, Verda Dawn, Montreal QC, Joslyn, Montreal, QC, Amber Lee (Sandy Shipley), Truro, NS, and April Rose, Montreal, QC, along with a whole host of nephews, nieces, relatives and dear friends.

“Without these women, in my life I would not have experienced, learned, travelled as much or underwent a true connection and love with my grandmother(s). When I was separated from my mother for a moment, my grandmother(s) stepped in on both sides and did what they could. I am forever grateful. Blessed to have examples and experienced the unwavering love, thankful for the relationships. Thank you, God for Grandmothers, who without question held me down no matter what. No matter where I was. They had my back. I love you forever Carolyn ‘Starr’ Halfkenny I appreciate you and all that you are”. - Tobias Odel Downing-Ramage (Grandson)

Starr will be greatly missed. I looked forward to seeing Starr come home to Truro after moving away. She always made a point to visit mom. In her usual style she would joke and tell stories about old times. We would laugh until the tears ran down our eyes.

Starr was always kind and caring, looking out for us younger ones. She could even get away with bossing us around and no one would get mad!

We were even allowed to hitch hike to Debert with Starr to go pick blueberries. That says a lot about her trustworthiness.

It’s with a sad heart that I give my condolences to the whole family. So much to remember about our times in church, the Marsh, and growing up.Starr left a legacy of love and now she can rest with the One who loved her most. Luella Jones

Toni, Jay, Tobias, brothers and sisters of the late Starr (Downing) Halfkenny; I (Shelley) remember with fondness: every year (as far back as I can remember) I knew when my summer began, as without fail, Starr & Toni would come home for vacation and Toni would come knocking on our Borden Family (next) door: “I’m here”! - my thoughts would be “let our summer begin” - thank you Starr! —those were the days —

Love and sincerest condolences to You all: Charlie Sr & Evie Borden and family ❤️

My condolences to my niece Toni and my nephew Tobias and also my siblings and our many nieces and nephews. Starr and I were two years apart in age but we went everywhere and did
everything together. We fought a lot, sometimes even fist fights, of course Mom put a stop to that. We also sang a lot together, Starr with her beautiful Alto voice will be very much missed. She knew I like fudge but had trouble making it, so she would always bring a batch with he when she came to visit or have it at her home when we visit. She will be missed. Just know Starr that we will be together again until then Rest in Peace.
