

Born in Trinidad in 1932, Clarence migrated to Canada in 1955, where he would make an indelible mark in academia, community development, social activism, and the performing arts.
Dr. Bayne’s career was a testament to his passion for education and community. At Concordia University, he inspired countless students with his wisdom, compassion, and vision. His contributions extended beyond the classroom, as he was deeply involved in the organizational development of the Black community in Canada, always championing the causes of equity, inclusion, and cultural pride. He was a key figure in the performing arts, nurturing the talents of many and advocating for the representation of Black voices in Canadian culture.
Clarence was not only a scholar but also a fierce advocate for social justice. His work in social activism led to official recognition by various levels of government, as well as numerous civic and social organizations. He will be remembered for his tireless efforts to better the lives of those around him, both through his academic work and his service to the community.
Clarence was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances Ward Bayne; his parents, Garfield and Edna Bayne; and his siblings, Cleopatra, Cynthia, Myrna, and Lloyd Bayne. He leaves to mourn his children Judy Bayne (Palmer) and Patrice Bayne, son-in-law Courtney Palmer; his grandchildren Janae and Markus Palmer; his sisters Evelyn Hansil and Edina Bayne; nieces and nephews Shelly-ann, Patrick, Robert, Stacey, Kareema, Adeyeme; several grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews, the Ward and Mawson families in England, as well as a host of cousins in Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, UK, United States, and Venezuela, including the Ramdoo, O'Neale, Knights, and Jackman families. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, relatives, and many friends who cherished his wisdom, and unwavering commitment to social justice.
A Celebratory Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 26, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 5610 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal.
Dr. Bayne was cremated on September 13, 2024. In a private family gathering, his remains will be laid to rest on what would have been his 92nd birthday, Monday, October 28, 2024.
