

Gerry Mathieu of the Society of Jesus died in the early morning hours of July 17 at the René Goupil Jesuit Community in Pickering, ON. Born in Saint-Gabriel-de-Brandon, QC he was the son of George and Mary Virginia (née Mackey) Mathieu. He was 86 years old and in his 69th year of religious life. He served at Loyola High School in Montréal for 52 years in various capacities as teacher, prefect and student counsellor. He was known for his lunch-hour faith formation meetings with groups of students, as well as being the driving force behind the annual Christmas basket campaign that saw students collecting and distributing huge amounts of food to needy families with the support of parents and teachers. He retired from active ministry at the school in 2018 but continued a ministry spiritual accompaniment. Rapidly declining health led to his move to the Pickering infirmary community in May of this year. Visitation at Côte-des-Neiges Funeral Centre (4525 Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal, QC; cf. website for details). Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 23 at Saint Ignatius Loyola Church (4455 West Broadway, Montreal, QC).
