August 23, 1929-June 25, 2025
It is with great sorrow that we share the sudden but peaceful passing of Martino (as he preferred to be called) 2 months short of his 96th birthday. He passed away in his home as he had always said he would. He came to Canada from Italy in 1954 and hit the ground running. He was trilingual in no time. He was married for 55 years to Maria Sabatino (d. 2009) with whom he raised a daughter Margaret (Tony Baratta) and a son Tony (Sherrey Roberts). He spent four years in the military and rose from Private to Sargent Major. He had enjoyed the camaraderie, fulfilling his responsibilities and learning skills, which would serve him well in civilian life.
We will remember Martino as handsome, honorable, generous, intelligent, and self-sufficient as well as hardworking. Family and friends admired and respected him for his strength of character and determination. He was fiercely independent and more stubborn than a mule. He lived life on his own terms. He was a respected businessperson running a one-person operation and still hard at work just two days before his passing.
He was a simple man with simple pleasures- his vegetable garden, his business, his Italian television shows and Italy, but above all, his family. He was passionate about his vegetable garden and had enjoyed discussing gardening and wine making with his best friend Donato. He had an unwavering love of his family and was very proud of his grandchildren and their spouses or partners, Valentina (Deni Antonecchia), Vanessa (Anthony Naccarato), Sara (Angelo Singleton), Christian, Mia. He was full of joy when he spent time with his great-grandchildren, Damiano, Adriano, Domenica and Raffaella.
He leaves to mourn his four siblings and numerous nieces and nephews in Argentina, relatives and friends in Toronto, Ohio and Italy. We are grateful to the friends and family who regularly called him to chat and see how he was doing.
His was a life well lived. May he now rest in eternal peace beside his wife Maria. A beloved individual to all, Fedele Martino leaves behind a legacy of warm memories.
In lieu of flowers and in honour of the love he had for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, memorial donations in the name of Fedele Martino may be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Canada or the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Thank you for considering this.
