BELLINI, FRANCESCO

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 10, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 77 after having enjoyed a vibrant life surrounded by family and friends, along with being distinguished by business achievements, philanthropy, and service to his country.

Beloved husband of 53 years to Marisa; loving father to Roberto (Myah) and Carlo (Darina); devoted grandfather to Aria, Matteo, Marina, and Leo; all who were a constant source of pride and joy throughout his life. Survived by his brother Filippo (Concetta). Born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy on November 20, 1947 to Berardino and Antonietta Bellini, Dr. Bellini immigrated to Canada in 1967 where he would go on to leave an indelible mark on the scientific and business landscape of his adopted country of Canada.

Dr. Bellini’s life was defined by vision, perseverance, and a profound commitment to improving the lives of others. As co-founder, CEO and President of BioChem Pharma, he led the discovery and development of Epivir (3TC), a breakthrough therapy that transformed the treatment landscape of HIV/AIDS worldwide. His leadership and entrepreneurial spirit helped build BioChem into Canada’s most influential biopharmaceutical company and a top biotech globally. BioChem, alongside his subsequent successful ventures in life sciences, would cement his reputation as a builder of industry and mentor to countless innovators and entrepreneurs.

Dr. Bellini was deeply committed to giving back to the community. His support for healthcare, medical research and education, including his transformative gift to McGill University for the Bellini Life Sciences Building, reflected his belief in the power of science to change the world for the better. He was equally passionate about his Italian heritage, including revitalizing the Ascoli Calcio football club in his hometown of Ascoli Piceno, Italy.

Dr. Bellini’s achievements were recognized with countless honours, including Officer of the Order of Canada, Officier de l’Ordre national du Québec, and Cavaliere del Lavoro (IT). Yet, those who knew him best will remember his warmth, generosity, strong and outspoken character, but most importantly his unwavering devotion to his family.

The Bellini Family would like to extend particular thanks to Dr. Grant Peters and his team at the CICU unit, Foothills Medical Center, for their particular attention and dedication to Dr. Bellini during his stay there.

S’est éteint paisiblement, entouré de ses proches, le 10 juillet 2025 à Calgary, Alberta, à l’âge de 77 ans, après une vie dédiée à sa famille et ses amis, riche en accomplissements et marquée par ses succès professionnels, sa philanthropie et son engagement envers son pays .

Époux bien-aimé de Marisa depuis 53 ans, père attentionné de Roberto (Myah) et Carlo (Darina), grand-père dévoué d’Aria, Matteo, Marina et Leo, qui ont tous été pour lui une source constante de fierté et de bonheur. Il laisse également dans le deuil son frère Filippo (Concetta). Né à Ascoli Piceno, en Italie, le 20 novembre 1947, fils de Berardino et Antonietta Bellini, le Dr Bellini a immigré au Canada en 1967, où il a profondément marqué le paysage scientifique et entrepreneurial de son pays d’adoption.

La vie du Dr Bellini a été guidée par sa vision, sa persévérance et une forte et sincère volonté d’améliorer la vie des autres. Cofondateur, chef de la direction et président de BioChem Pharma, il a dirigé la découverte et le développement de l’Epivir (3TC), une thérapie révolutionnaire qui a transformé le traitement du VIH/SIDA à l’échelle mondiale. Son leadership et son esprit entrepreneurial ont permis à BioChem de devenir la société biopharmaceutique la plus influente du Canada et une référence mondiale dans le secteur biotechnologique. Ses entreprises ultérieures dans le domaine des sciences de la vie ont consolidé sa réputation de bâtisseur d’industries et de mentor pour de nombreux innovateurs et entrepreneurs.

Le Dr Bellini était animé d’un profond désir de redonner à la communauté. Son soutien aux soins de santé, à la recherche médicale et à l’éducation, notamment par son don majeur à l’Université McGill pour la construction du pavillon des sciences de la vie Bellini, témoigne de sa conviction que la science peut changer le monde pour le mieux. Il était également fier de ses racines italiennes, tel que mis en évidence par sa contribution à la revitalisation du club de football Ascoli Calcio, dans sa ville natale.

Ses réalisations ont été reconnues par de nombreux honneurs, dont celui d’Officier de l’Ordre du Canada, d’Officier de l’Ordre national du Québec et de Cavaliere del Lavoro (Italie). Ceux qui l’ont côtoyé se souviendront surtout de sa chaleur humaine, de sa générosité, de sa force de caractère et, par-dessus tout, de l’amour inconditionnel envers sa famille.

La famille Bellini souhaite exprimer sa gratitude au Dr Grant Peters et à son équipe de l’unité CICU du Foothills Medical Center pour leur dévouement et leurs soins attentionnés durant son hospitalisation.
