She was born on April 4, 1941 in Cirencester, England, the daughter of Kenneth and Sybil Haworth. She is survived by her husband, Robert and three children, Darren (Clavel), Jeremy and Rosemary (Patrick), as well as four grandchildren, Matthew King, Kieran King and Tyler and Aubree Watson, and her brother, Martin Haworth.
Janet came to Canada (for 2 years!) in 1961. She was a Social Worker by profession, having earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Birmingham and a Master's at St. Patrick's College in Ottawa. She worked at Children's Service Centre, Douglas Hospital and Lethbridge Centre before retiring in 1977 to be a full-time mother and volunteer.
Janet always put the needs of others before hers. She was loving, kind and compassionate in a quiet way, and was known for her loving smile even to the end.
Over the years, her volunteer activities were many. She performed many tasks at Christ Church Cathedral, including 62 years of singing in the choir, President of the Chancel Guild, Chair of Forum, President of the Social Service Society and many duties done quietly behind the scene. She also played many roles in Montreal West: Brown Owl to 2 generations of girls in Brownies, President of IODE HMS Victory, coordinator of the book bindery at the Children's Library, and many others.
In recognition of her service, Janet has received several awards, including The Quebec Award from Girl Guides of Canada, Good Citizenship Award and Primary Life Membership from IODE, a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club and a certificate of recognition for her singing from the Bishop of Montreal.
Janet's hands were never idle. She was renowned for her skills, and imagination, in knitting and making teddy bears.
Janet and Bob loved travelling together, both on land and on water. Their journeys took them to every continent. Janet always found time to sit and write a detailed account of the day's activities, and reading these journals brings back happy memories.
Janet will be missed by so many - her immediate family of children and grandchildren, neighbours and friends in Montreal and beyond, and family in the UK.
Grateful thanks go out to all those who helped during the final journey: Alex, Alison, Mary Ann, Gerhard, Golda, so many loving and caring health care workers and many, many friends.
The family will receive condolences at Collins Clarke Funeral Home, 5610 Sherbrooke St. West on July 3 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9. The funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal on July 4 at 2 pm (also livestreamed at montrealcathedral.ca/live), with a reception to follow. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in the cemetery of the Church of St. John the Baptist in the Wilderness, Kilkenny, Quebec.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to Nova Home Care or Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal would be appreciated.
