Dr. John Fong Chong passed away peacefully following a stroke at age 94, on May 27th 2020 at the Montreal General Hospital. He was preceded by his wife Andrea Houle in 2013.
John was born in Trinidad, West Indies. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 to attend the University of Francis Xavier, Antingonish, Nova Scotia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. He then attended McGill University, where he studied Dentistry. He graduated in 1960 and went into private practice, until he retired in 2001.
He taught Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at McGill Faculty of Dentistry for 59 years; an academic teaching record. He was a member of the International Academy of Dentistry and was very proud to have had the distinct honor and privilege to have contributed to the training of thousands of dental students.
John was a very generous and gentle soul who helped many people to achieve their academic potential. He was a hard driven perfectionist, who did not settle for second best and believed that only those who paid their dues, deserved to be rewarded.
He enjoyed many hobbies that included listening to classical music, attending opera performances, world travel, cabinet making, and museum visits. However, his greatest passion was fishing. In his younger days, as a member of a private fishing club, he went on annual fishing trips up north. He especially enjoyed the thrill of deep sea fishing in the Caribbean.
Surviving John, are sisters Odette, Irma, Caesarine, brother Glen and the late (Ursula and Thrilling), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Due to the Covid 19 protocol, visitation and burial is restricted to family. In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
