Kanti mama’s passing has reminded me of one memory I have of him, which I have never forgotten to this day. I was around 11 years old and was writing calligraphy and experimenting with fonts, as he observed me, he got annoyed in my inability to pay attention to the detail in what I was doing, but with such patience ensured I learned to correctly and meticulously align each letter equidistant apart and form each letter precisely.  

It's in the attention to the detail that beauty is created, and beautiful things come together. Kanti mama’s passion for life was in the little details, He took the time to get to know everyone in the family over his many visits to South Africa and bring us closer together. He will always be remembered for his kindness, caring nature, a very proud father of 2 beautiful angels, a loving husband to Aunty Maria and a distinguished gentlemen.

Dear Maria and Vipasa,
My sincere condolence on your loss. Kanti mama was dear to me.  I have fond memories  of my visit in Spring 1989.  I remember how enthusiastic he was about his work. Especially his hats and bags he was creating.  We  ate delicious food.  We spent quality time together.  We bonded. He inspired me.
When we parted he gave me a cosy navy blue jumper he had just treated himself to. A lovely blend of wool and cotton with full frontal zipper, pockets and a hoody. It’s over thirty years old now. I still wear it especially when it’s cold and I need to work outside. It reminds me of him.   It connects me to my family, my past. It reminds me of a dream fulfilled. When I wear that jumper I can still him see hugging my mother the night he came to say goodbye to her. They are together now. 


It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I share memories  of my dearest KantImama,  fondly known as ‘Jivan’. So with all  due respect to all his siblings, Kantmama was extraordinarily special to me. Although the age  gap between us is 13,   He treated me as his brother and was a man with a  unique stature. A kind hearted, down to earth, caring and humble soul who’s very nature was to be friendly and respectful to all who came into his midst,  Enterpreneurship was endemic to his making but his secret to his successes was his capacity and drive to work very very hard backed up by an ingenious brain with wisdom and intelligence very few people on the planet are gifted with. Family, friends, clients, even strangers took an instant liking to him as he just resonated that humble friendly nature which made him unique. He was very close to my mum, Suribhen, and as a result he featured prominently in our life’s and often came  to our home. When I was a little bit I used to accompany him to his shop during my school holidays. The ship was called Bhagsons Tailors & Outfitters.  I just went to his shop just to be with him as he was just a kind likeable person. What I can clearly recall was that ge never stopped working. Designing, cutting, sewing stitching or doing needlework or serving customers. He was totally  devoted to his work, a perfectionist and passionate about every task he engaged with.  He loved and treasured his family till the very end.And every member was very close to his heart.  When he made his first significant trip  to South  Africa with Auntie Maria in the 70’s he tailored a a garment in leather for every nephew & niece, custom made and of a modern unique style, knowing each of their  names . He remained close to me and we stayed in regular contact till the very end. Special gratitude must be given to Auntie Marie & Vipasa who cans  stands proud to be an integral part if him and celebrate his life. I pray for his soul. Om Shaanti.🙏🏼

He always made an effort to call and stay in touch, which meant a lot to all of us. He never missed an opportunity to talk to me when I visited my mum on holidays. Bhai- a name used to refer to an elder brother. 
Kantibhai was an amazing man. He left South Africa at an early age but always kept in touch with all.
In the early years when there was no cell phones he used to buy a phone card and call us. He use to speak to us until his card was empty, that use to mean 30 to 45 minutes at a time. 
He would often call to ask for Mum’s recipes and write them down step by step. 
I always admired his love for cooking and passion to learn how to cook new Indian dishes.

He would ask about each and everyone of the family members during these call. 

He drew up a family tree where he added the extended family. He was so detailed and meticulous. Being a huge family of  14 siblings he knew each person’s name and add it on to his family tree. 

I still remember his first  visit to South Africa. He had married Maria, an amazing woman , who got along with everyone. I went with them to Durban. My son, Sanjay was 4 years and Kanti Bhai bought him this incredible remote police car.
His second trip was with his family 👪 I felt privileged to have Kanti stay in my home. We met his beautiful children Vipasa and Joseph.

We had a family reunion so
Kantibhai could spend time with everyone in the family: nieces , nephews and siblings. This was by far my fondest memory of my brother, we got to know each other and I felt so grateful for this special time together.
I will miss you dearly my brother. Rest in eternal peace .🙏🏼

As we light this candle...we celebrate the legacy of Kantikaka. 
We remember his immense love for family and friends. He was a loving , generous and kind hearted Soul. He was beacon of light and we all seemed to be drawn to him like moths to a flame. Although Oceans apart we were always close to heart.  

He was very passionate about his work. He spoke often about garments he created. He left an indelible mark in the Fashion Industry. 
We will miss our long conversations. My only regret is that I could not fulfill my wish to visit him in Canada.

Kanti. My Mentor, Friend and my hero. He guided and groomed me into a young man in the 60's. l lost my Dad at the tender age of 11years and l had to find work to help my mum and siblings. Kanti offered me job at Bhagson tailors and taught me tailoring.
I grew up with the Jivan's ,work with them and married into the family. When he left abroad, I continued to work for his younger brother Ashwin. Such precious memories I will treasure for years to come. 

Kanti had a heart of gold and was loved by all his customers and friends. He had an infectious personality.
A well groomed, charming and handsome gentleman.
His kindness and love for helping others was phenomenal.

Dearest Maria & Vipasa, 
Our deepest condolences on your great loss. Our hearts broke when we heard the news. We may have just met Kanti, but we felt that we had known him forever—a kindred spirit. He was a kind soul with a sense of humour that was hard to match.  He has left a big void in the lives of those who knew him, but will forever remain in our hearts. He now joins his son and other precious family members so they can look after you & Vipasa.  We send you both our prayers, strength & love.

The Reunion
I am walking along a cobbled stone path I noticed it was surrounded by white, pink, red, orange and yellow flowers. It is a beautiful clear and sunny day. As I am walking I notice a young boy standing I am curious to know who he is so I continue to walk as I get closer with happiness I see that it is my son Joseph. We both are matching wearing white clothing with a colorful garland around our necks. I began running towards him I feel free from pain and young again. I embrace my son as I do he tells me dad we got lots to catch up on and lots of people to see lets go. Before I follow my son I leave a message to my dear wife Maria, my daughter Vipasa and the rest of my family. Remember that I will always love you and that I am always going to be in your hearts. I am free from pain and I am feeling free and young again. One day we will meet on this path and I will embrace you once again. For now please be strong and remember that I love you.
