been 5 years and how l miss him..He helped me so much. still have the ho model  trains and  tin metal cars from the 1950's. Trying to find a home for them .and the Xmas trees were something else of which l still have the glass ornaments

How time flies. l will always remember him making my Xmas happy with those wonderful gifts. l still have those metal toy cars from the 1950's and l had wonderful model railroading experiences in the 1960's. l still have those steam engines and scratch built railroad cars and passenger cars.

and his passing before Xmas was hard to realize.
he made my childhood happy and particularly Xmas which was always a joyous event. l still remember him from the numerous Dinky toys from the50's and the HO model trains and cars which l plan on donating to the McAdam train museum where they have big train layouts on my passing.

Although it has been 50 years, I will always remember Mr Torjeson’s quiet yet controlled demeanour. Truly one very special man, and a fantastic life role model. As a rather rambunctious youngster, ‘Torje’

Whenever Xmas comes at this time of year l always remember him .l miss him. He always made every Xmas a happy event.
l still have my HO trains and rr cars, tin cars and dinky toys which he gave me at Xmas.

He was the best vice principal, and I looked up to him. I was in a bad family situation and was sleeping in the washroom at school. He found out about it and got me the desperately needed help. I will never forget it. If it wasnt for him, I dont know what would have happened to me. Rest in peace my friend.

I was so sad to hear of Mr. Torjusen's passing. There are some people who leave a little hole in your heart when they move on and he was one of them. Quiet, highly observant and always said exactly the thing you needed to hear at just the right time in order for you to carry on. Will never forget his kind eyes and giving heart.

Mr. T was THE authority figure that all the LSHS students loved and respected.  After we graduated, he came to our reunions and get-togethers too, and continued to be a very important influence in our lives. 

We will miss Mr. T very, very much.

I never forgot the words of wisdom Mr Torjusen tried to instill in me 23 years ago and have often referenced him throughout the years. He told me I reminded him of himself and was like a branch floating downriver losing my way but that I could turn it around if I tried. I rolled my eyes in rebellion. At my “graduation” ceremony as he took my hand and handed me my diploma knowing full well this wasn’t really a celebration for me he said quietly, “you could’ve done this if you really tried.”  
He was right and years later I did graduate. I wish I could’ve thanked him for being one of the few who genuinely cared. He was an old friend of my grandfather and I respected his opinion. He can Rest In Peace  knowing he positively impacted so many lost kids like myself who can proudly say they are successful today.  
My condolences to his family. 

He was one of the most amazing human beings. Was at LSP H from 1975-1980 and he cared about all the students in school. I wish and I am sure many, that we appreciate him. 

Unlike most who have shared their memories of Mr. Torjusen, he was never my teacher, my principal or my neighbour. He was the father of my childhood friend Carl. So I never knew him as anyone but "Mister" Torjusen. In those days that's just how it was.
I knew him as my friend's father who was almost always busy at work in his study upstairs above the front door.  (His commitment to his work and his students didn't end when he left school; I can attest to that!)
Having left Montreal many years ago, I never saw him riding his motorcycle either. I knew him before he had rebuilt it, while it was still in so many pieces in his basement. So it is wonderful to read how that motorcycle positively influenced many of his students over the years.  (Btw, he also had a 67 Ford Mustang that Carl was allowed to drive.  I was green with envy. Fun times.)
But more than the motorcycle, the respect and admiration and love so many of his contemporaries and students have expressed for him makes me truly sorry that I was too young to fully appreciate what a remarkable person he was. 
Carl, you should be very, very proud to be able to say that this man was your father. Nothing but time can free you of the pain you feel but you will always have your father's strength in your heart.  As will so many others whose lives have been touched by his presence.

Lief was my neighbour. I knew him through my sister and brother -in-law who bought his old house.  Over the years I remember seeing him on many occasions walk by my house. I was impressed how spry he was and how well he maintained his property. 
I introduced myself and told him I was Daniela's sister. I also told him that I inherited the cabinets from his old house. He was a very nice man but also a shy man who was very appreciated by his neighbours.  
During the pandemic I rang his doorbell on 2 occasions to ask him if he needed anything but he said he had everything he needed. I was glad to learn that people were taking care of him.
We were all very sad when we found out he passed away.  We knew we lost a very special man.

Thank you for the beautiful home you sold us and for the beautiful MacKenzie you let us adopt.  Your home in Montreal West will never forget you.  Rest in peace dear Mr. Torjusen.

I had Mr Torjusen for English and Creative Writing at John Grant High School. He was Vice Principal during my graduating year at LaSalle High School. He was an excellent teacher and administrator, popular and well-respected. A fine legacy to leave behind. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Torjusen was the Vice-Principal at Baron Byng when I attended. I needed a lot of attention and misbehaved all the time and was often in the office.  Mr. Torjusen was quiet and patient and always treated me with patience and respect.  I respected and admired him.

Leif was one of the dedicated educators I have ever had the pleasure to work with. While English Department head back in the days of John Grant High School he would come in on Saturdays to paint the walls and clean the windows of our new 'Resource Centers' that fitted into the new and innovative 'mod system'. As an administrator he never relied on 'the Big Stick' method of discipline but always connected to the students as a mentor and leader. He loved teaching, he loved schools, and he loved the students. Education was, beside his motorcycle and his sail boat, his life.

The world has lost a very special person. Those of us who had the opportunity to know and work for him are blessed. As a teacher at St Laurent High, his gentle and kind manner was there for all of us. How I remember when we would be putting on School Dances, Fashion Shows and Family Nights, he would come to the gym having changed into his jeans..and there he was climbing up and down ladders helping with decorations and so on. I can remember thinking...here I am an adult and he makes me feel safe so can you imagine how the kids feel!! Sometimes, a tool had been forgotten and he would call a student to go to his office, go to his desk and open up a certain drawer to find the missing article. He was so trusting and the students never betrayed it. And, yes, how impressed the students were by his motorcycle arrival. Mr T, I had one of the best teaching experiences of my career with YOU as my beloved Principal. Rest in Peace.My sympathies to the family.

Memories flood back to 1992 at St. Laurent High School.  As a newly appointed Vice-Principal, I felt nervous and overwhelmed.   All these emotions vanished once I met the principal, Mr. Leif  Torjusen,  whose calm,  positive, smiling demeanour welcomed me with open arms.  He quickly became a wonderful mentor and friend who  made my job an absolute pleasure and a wonderful learning experience! We had coffee every morning,  chatted, strategized, resolved issues together and had some good laughs, as well!  He shared leadership duties and gave me wings to fly. He taught me about reaching out positively, listening and taking care of students and people in my school community  with dignity and grace. Rest In Peace, Mr. T and thank you for all the lessons! You were the greatest memories I have of high school...Lasalle High wasn't an easy school but you made it a fair and easier place to be. Rest in peace...

The world lost a good , caring and gentle soul.  Everyone knew who the coolest Vice Principal at our school was, and everyone felt comfortable speaking with him.  And he rode a motorcycle too!!  Thank you for being the person that you were Mr. T.  You inspired many students to do better, and treated many of us young "punks", with the respect, that perhaps sometime, wasn't deserved.  May you rest in peace, Sir.


 Leif Torjusen (aka Mr. T.) was the man who shaped my teaching career and never gave up on me. He was my boss( as I called him when I wanted to tease him), my mentor and my friend.
“It was a good concert (that’s what he called our end of year dance show), but what are you going to do do make it even better next year”. He never stopped raising the bar for me and the students and we always did out best not to disappoint him.
He loved the students as if they were his own kids. His door was always open for them. Quiet and “shy” his eyes would shine with pride when he spoke of the achievements of the sports teams, music, dance, science, math and other departments of his school. “ A school is not just a building. The students are the bricks that hold it together, you are the school” he would always say at the end of an assembly at St. Laurent High. Going even further back in time I will never forget the Baron Byng years (early 70's) when as a young teacher I was amazed to see an administrator come to school on his motorcycle and jeans not only during the school days, but on weekends to paint the student council room and do things to transform an old school into something live and pleasant.
Mr. T., I will miss you, will always keep you in my heart and remember that I can always do better.

Mr. T, you were a nice man and fair Principal at St. Laurent High School 1982-1984. I remember you pulling up in the school parking lot with your motorcycle and thinking that was so cool for a Principal to do!! RIP..

Who would believe that an 18 year bicyclist delivering telegrams for CNR in 1946 would end up as a teacher, administrator and principal later in life.  Many will remember him commuting to school on a MC to teach and l thought he was COOL. He made my Xmas a joyous event. He was a caring and devoted husband to my late mother Anna.  Many will remember him for advice and  friendly conversations. Beside reading & riding MC's he enjoyed sailing as his  favorite pastime. Last time l entered Canada a CBSA agent named her child Leif and l commended her on choice.

Mr.Torjusen was the first principal I had the pleasure of working with. He was very helpful and made me feel welcomed from day one. I will always remember him for the kind person he was. May he Rest In Peace.

He was one of the few teachers who left a lasting memory with me. He was a great teacher who recognized individuality  in his students and treated them as such.  He was a special person and I can only imagine the loss his family feels. Know that he touched many and made a difference.

I remember Leif driving his tractor in the front yard of the school with trees ready for planting. Students gathered all around,   a pied piper. He planted the entire section of front lawn. When challenged by student behaviour he would scratch his head , come up with an answer, then run off to another challenge , his long hair dancing behind him. Skilled and determined to make his students the best they could be.

Deepest condolences to his family. I was a student at ESSL in the mid 80’s. I remember being scared of High School... BUT 1st day seeing this white hair gentleman pull up on a motorcycle .... thinking (I hope I have him as a teacher ) First morning assembly- found out he was was my principal - thought ... it’s all going to be fine.  He was kind, caring - knew all his students names (plus their problems/stresses & anxieties ) .... his door was always open. His support was always felt and known. He left a lasting impression on many many hearts! 

I was a student of his.He had infinite patience and just one word that we needed music to work by and he would provide good music.  Wonderful gentle man.

Rip Mr. T. Was my first VP at LSHS from 1976-1981.  Was such an unique  person on how he interacted with the  students. Left a lasting impression  on me. My condolences to  his family. 

Mr Torjusen was my principal at St Laurent HS in the early 80s. I was going through a lot at the time but he was always receptive and open to talking to me when I was kicked out of class. I remember him telling me that his wife worked in a candy store of some kind and giving me candy while we talked through my life situations. He was very compassionate and kind and made a difference during that difficult period of my life. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and close friends. May he rest in peace always. He was my beloved vice principal who was gentle and understanding towards me,  a fresh faced 12 year old who had just started high school in 1978. I thought he was so cool riding a motorcycle to school. Everything was all so new to me and life was changing so quickly and he helped me through it. He is one of my cherished childhood/teenaged memories and I will always remember him.  He walked a good and long walk. May He Rest In Peace now. 

He was a lovely man. He always listened to me as if what I said was both interesting and of value. He gave me confidence in myself when I had none. I am sure he could have been successful in any profession, luckily for so many of us he choose to be a teacher.

One of my fondest memories was when I went to my son's first parent/teacher night and as my son was introducing me to his principal, Mr. T greeted me by name. He had remembered me from my days at John Grant High School.  He was a teacher who always had time for his students and will be remembered by his ability to make each of us feel comfortable enough to ask for his help or just to say hi.

I never liked one class and Mr. T knew as I was always in the office. At a desk that was in the office.    I have always thought of him.  My prayers go out to the Torjusen family.   Mr. T all the kids that went to LSHS loved this man.  One day I will meet up with you.

I remember....it was a sunny autumn day...and I watched as you pulled up on your motorcycle...and took the time to remove your helmet. I waited for you to turn in my direction, and I remember  saying hi Mr. Torjusen🙂 You greeted me with kind words and a smile. I was always impressed  that LaSalle  High had a principal that rode up to the building  on a motorcycle.  I do not recall ever being called to the office. Jeans, beards, motorcycles.  A gentle voice when handing out discipline. I will admit I sat in your office a few times lol but thankfully you had an understanding of your discipline could not be worse than what kids might receive at home. Lol
Loved those 3pm suspensions only to come back to school the next morning.
There was a reason for a whole school doing a walkout for you.

Mr. T.  had a huge influence on me as a teenager at John Grant High in the 70’s.  His kindness, compassion, wit and intelligence have never been forgotten and I thought of him often, with fondness, throughout my life.  Recently I was looking at an old yearbook and reading his inscription to me.  The words he wrote showed that he always took the time to really know and understand his students; a very special trait in a teacher.  My deepest condolences to the family.  Rest easy, Mr. T.  You will be missed.

What an amazing Man and a true friend to many.  M T was my principal at Lasalle High and I was in his office a few times...  Mr T always listen and always gave great advice and had so much respect to everyone.

My sincere condolences to an amazing principal and anazing man. I remember him telling me how he dropped out of school and then went back. He is a true example of never giving up. He achieved such success and was truly loved by the students. He was so sweet.

I went to school from 1976-till like 1981 ---I tried wood working and mecanics and then thew science called me--and through it all --Mr Torguson-and Mr.Sipos --called me into their offices to steer me right --never mad never judgemental--and never as I just a number --he knew me by name --as he knew all the rest of the school--calm and cool -tall and blond --like the Norse God-he will be in his next life--Thor--

Leif was our neighbour for many years. He was always there to lend a helping hand and a kind word of advice. Eventually conversation grew into cherished friendship, one that continued well after we left the neighbourhood. Our kids admired him. He helped nurture in them an appreciation for reading, music, science. He sparked their imaginations. A true educator and mentor to many. A gentleman in every sense of the word.  We will miss you dearly, Leif.

My mentor, my protector, and many late evenings, after school dance clean ups, my drive home.  We kept in touch through the years and I was so upset to miss your big birthday party. My heart is heavy and my eyes filled with tears but I am so glad to be able to say, " Mr. T? I was one of the lucky who knew him."

We met as sailors and parted as friends. I will forever cherish the memories of our weekly get-togethers ("coffee and muffins") over the last 10 years where we would exchange ideas and opinions on many topics of mutual interest. I will sorely miss that part of my life.

Je garde un précieux souvenir de Leif. Il a été un grand humaniste et un éducateur accompli. Après tant d'années, son sourire et sa voix calmante ont encore écho en moi.

Perhaps one of the finest human beings I knew. Thank you for having respect and confidence in me for all the years you were my boss. There is unlikely to be anyone else who could match your leadership and dedication to staff and students. You also became a close friend and adoptive grandfather to our children. I will miss our chats and all the times you would drive out to our place in your little sports car. I know you will be missed by many colleagues and former students. I hope you are now riding your motorcycle or sailing on your way to heaven. Goodbye ol friend.
