Sadly, in the early morning hours of January 4th, 2024, Max passed away at the age of 92. He was born in Miminegash, PEI, the third son of Isabel (McCarthy) and Patrick Callaghan.
Max was a very active child who grew up loving all sports. At a young age he helped organize and manage a local baseball team in which he was the catcher. This team went on to capture a couple of provincial championships, a feat of which he was very proud. While attending university he played hockey but mainly he played varsity rugby. Max had a competitive nature and thrived when involved in any game. He had an outgoing demeanor and a jovial personality which earned him many friends during his life time.
After graduation Max moved to Montreal where he was employed with Northern Telecom, from which he retired. During these working years he played hockey and curled recreationally as well as enjoyed a round of golf. Every summer, Max came back to PEI both while on vacation and in retirement. He loved his Island and it’s been said that Max’s heart never did leave his place of birth.
Later in life Max found his love and life partner, Sheila Sheeran. They were together for 45 years, and married for 33 years. As a bachelor when they first met, Max embraced Sheila’s family, Lorne (Venita) Janice (Roger), their children, Patrick (Anna), Kristen (Kristopher) and grandchildren (Elodie/Mavis). Max continued to enjoy sports as a spectator and fan watching and encouraging Patrick and Kristen as they played organized baseball, hockey, football and soccer.
True to his love of baseball Max was an avid fan of the Montreal Expos, and he and Sheila were regular spectators until the disappointing news of their sale. He was a member of the United Irish Societies of Montreal, participating in their events, and he proudly and enthusiastically attended the St. Patrick Day parades each year with the family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sheila and 7 brothers and 3 sisters and a large extended family. Max is survived by 3 siblings, Joyce McIver, Eloise MacDonald (Aubrey) and Louis (Judy).
Max’s last days were peaceful due to the extraordinary care of the staff at the CHSLD du Manoir-de-l’Ouest-de-l’ile. Max will be laid to rest in Montreal beside his wife at the Cote des Neiges Funeral Centre at a future date. This will be followed by a memorial service in the summer of 2024 in Palmer Road, PEI.
