Phyllis Anetta Mayers, née Sandiford, passed away January 26, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband Lindorf Hylvester Mayers, her father, Albert Eversley Sandiford, and her aunt Erla Blandeen Sandiford. She is survived by her cherished mother, Marjorie Euraline Sandiford, her dear brother Melvin Sandiford, her loving children Michelle, Neil, Lindsey, and Kevin, as well as her beloved grandchildren Willem, Maxim, and Kennie.
She also leaves to mourn her half-sister Audrey, her aunts Grace, Hazel, Rose, and Thelma, her dear friends, Janet, Lucille, and Myrtle, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins, and many other close relatives and friends.
Born in Barbados on September 2, 1944, Phyllis was a woman who made endless kindness and immense generosity the guiding principles of everything she did. She was a woman of strong moral convictions, who saw the inequities of life but refused to allow them to dim her light. Instead, it prompted her to celebrate every beautiful moment wherever one could be found.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Phyllis found joy in spending time with those she loved. Her rambunctious laugh filled the kitchen where she delighted in preparing meals, both mundane and majestic, all while engaging in conversations of every nature. She had a long career in social work, both as a worker with her own caseloads and as a teacher to those who shared her cherished vocation.
Phyllis was active in the church, first at St. Columba, then Trinity Memorial, and finally St. Thomas’. A devout Anglican, Phyllis took great comfort in her unwavering faith and pride in the communities of each church’s congregations, always taking every opportunity to connect with those around her.
She would always take the time to hear what people had to say, something she did for her family, her friends, students, and clients as readily as she would for strangers she would encounter on the street. The depth of Phyllis’ kindness knew no bounds.
Phyllis’ absence will be felt profoundly by those who knew her and, though she now sits in paradise, she will forever be missed.
