Comtois, professeur émérite de la Faculté de droit de l’Université de Montréal, notaire
honoraire. Il est né du mariage d’Isidore Comtois et de Malvina Houde de Saint-Eustache,
prédécédé par son fils Denys, frère de Léo, Rolland, Bernard et Cécile tous décédés.
Lui survit sa sœur, Gabrielle (Jos.Landreville) de Saint-Eustache.
Il laisse dans le deuil Evelyn Michaud, son épouse, ses filles, Lorraine (feu Alain Devost)
Andrée (Guy Bourduas), ses petits-enfants Julie Berthold (Mathieu Fréchette), Etienne Berthold (Josiane
Gervais), Jean-Christophe Berthold et Gabriel-Arnaud Berthold, (Mariella Montplaisir), Mathieu Bourduas
(Cloé Landreville) et Elise Bouduas), ses arrière-petits enfants Zachary Roberge, Antoine
Berthold et Eloi Bourduas, également ses beaux-fils, fils d’Evelyn, Bernard Bilodeau
(Susan Ross), Claude Bilodeau (Johanne Farley) et leurs enfants Brigitte, Sophie, Ariane
et Sébastein Bilodeau qui ont toujours considéré Roger comme leur grand-père.
Après ses études classiques au Collège Bourget de Rigaud et des stages au Saint Michael’s
College de Toronto et à l’Ecole normale Jacques-Cartier de Montréal, Roger a poursuivi
ses études à la Faculté de droit de Université de Montréal où il a obtenu sa license en droit.
Par la suite, il s’est inscrit à l’Université d’Ottawa et après soutenance d’une thèse sur la
communauté de biens, il a obtenu le diplôme de docteur en droit. Après son admission à
la Chambre des notaires, Roger Comtois a exercé sa profession à Lachute à l’étude de
Me Gaétan Valois. Roger Comtois a ensuite été nommé professeur adjoint à la Faculté de droit où il a fait
carrière jusqu’à sa retraite en 1984. Il a été directeur de droit notarial, secrétaire de
la faculté et doyen de 1976 à 1980. Il a été professeur invité aux universités d’Ottawa,
McGill de Montréal, de Sherbrooke et professeur associé à l’université de Poitiers,
en France. Parellement à sa carrière universitaire, Roger Comtois a été très actif au sein de la
profession notariale : Dès 1951, il a participé aux travaux de diverses commissions
de la Chambre des notaires et en 1966 il en devint président jusqu’en 1969. Il a été
directeur de la Revue du Notariat pendant 42 ans de 1955 jusqu’en 1998. Il est aussi
l’auteur d’ouvrages de droit civil notamment d’un « Traité théorique et pratique de
la communauté de biens » (1964). Il a participé aux travaux de l’Office de revision
du code civil notamment à titre de président des régimes matrimoniaux qui a
recommandé la société d’acquêts, le régime légal depuis 1974.
Roger Comtois a été membre de la Société royale de Canada, Il a reçu de nombreuses
distinctions : doctorat honorifique de l’Université d’Ottawa, la nomination à titre
d’Officier de l’Ordre du Canada en 1982, depuis dix ans, la journée Roger Comtois
de la faculté de droit de l’Université de Montréal ainsi nommée en son honneur, où
des professeurs distingués sont invités comme conférenciers, et dernièrement la
médaille du jubilé de diamant de la Reine Elisabeth II.

In Montreal, after a brief stay in hospital, Roger Comtois, Professor Emiritus of the Law faculty of the University of Montreal, Notary honorabilis, died peacefully on February 7th at the age of 92 minus two days. He was the son of Isidore Comtois and Malvina Houde of Saint-Eustache. Predeceased by is son Denys, he is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn Michaud, his two daughters Lorraine (Alain Devost), Andrée (Guy Bourduas,), His six grand-children: Julie Berthold (Mathieu Fréchette), Etienne Berthold (Josiane Gervais), Jean-Christophe et Gabriel-Arnaud Berthold (Mariella Montplaisir), Elise et Mathieu Bourduas (Cloé Landreville), his three great-grand-children Zachary Roberge, Antoine Berthold and Eloi Bourduas,. He is survived by his sister Gabrielle (Jos Landreville). He will always be remembered fondly by Evelyn’s sons : Bernard Bilodeau (Susan Ross), Claude Bilodeau (Joanne Farley) and her four grand-children who always knew Roger as their dear grand-father : Brigitte. Sophie, Ariane and Sébastien Bilodeau. .
Roger Comtois obtained his Law Degree from the University of Montreal and became a member of La Chambre des Notaires and practiced for three years as a Notary in Lachute, He then became Professor of Law at the University of Montreal where he taught until his retirement in 1984. He was Dean of the Faculty from 1976 until 1980. From 1951 Roger Comtois was also very active in his Notarial Profession. He became President of La Chambre des Notaires from 1966 to 1969. He was a member of l’Office de Revision du Code Civil and acted as President of “Les Régimes Matrimoniaux” Committee who recommended “La Société d “Acquets” which was accepted and became Law in Quebec. He was the author of many Civil Law Books and was the Editor of “La revue du Notariat” for 42 years.Notary Comtois received many decorations: A Honorary PHD from the University of Ottawa, he became Officer of the Order of Canada in 1982, for ten years, the Faculty of Law of the Univercity of Montreal has dedicated one day yearly called “Journée Roger Comtois” , reknown professors of Law are invited speakers, and lately he received the Medal of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

The religious Mass will be held February 14 at 11:00 AM at Église Notre-Dame des Neiges, located at 5366 ch. de la Côte-des-Neiges about two blocks North of Queen Mary Road, Internment will be at 12:30 PM in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery.
Donations in his memory to a Society of Research for Breathing problems will ne gladly accepted.
