

It is with deep sadness and profound love that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Shirley Ann Mate. Shirley, who just turned 88, peacefully departed this world at 1:55 a.m. on July 25, 2024, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
She was surrounded by the comfort and warmth of her loving family and friends. In her final moments, despite enduring incredible pain, Shirley managed to make those who cared for her smile.
Shirley began her career working in a bank. After raising her daughters as a single parent, she returned to the workforce and continued her career as an engineering secretary, until her retirement.
Shirley was a devout Christian, a loving mother to her daughters, Jody and Lori, and a cherished grandmother to Chadwick, Casey and Catlin. She was also a friend to many, including Michael, who was like the son she never had and her most trusted confidant. Survived by her nieces and nephews; Graham, Johnny, Glennis, Debbie, Timmy, and Garth, and predeceased in death by Jimmy, Audrey, Billy, Brenda and Stephen. Not to be forgotten is her faithful companion, Tashie, her 23 year old cat, who was her soulmate and best friend.
Her life reflected her compassion for connecting with others. She was an avid pen pal, cherishing the art of letter-writing and maintaining countless heartfelt correspondences around the world over the years. Known for her vibrant personality and humour (she loved to laugh) Shirley gained widespread affection as the « Queen of Facebook ». Her witty and outrageous posts brought daily laughter to her friends and followers. She had the unique ability to find joy and share it with others. She loved discussing American politics with anyone that listened. As the matriarch of the family name, Shirley played a vital role in weaving together the intricate tapestry of our family's history.
Her love and acceptance knew no bounds. Shirley embraced everyone with an open heart, regardless of race, identity, or creed. Her legacy of compassion and unity will be cherished, and her feisty spirit forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The wake and funeral ceremony of Shirley Ann Mate will be held at the Collins Clarke MacGillivray White funeral home located at 5610 Sherbrooke St W on Thursday, August 1 starting at 10:00 AM followed by a service in the adjacent Chapel at 11:00 AM. She will be buried at the Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Pointe-Claire at 1:30 PM, all family and close friends are welcome.
