Angela Gerardi Spellman

August 4, 1924April 1, 2021

Angela Gerardi Spellman was born in rural Oklahoma 96 years ago. She studied nursing at the St. Edward’s Mercy School of Nursing in Fort Smith, Arkansas and became a Registered Nurse in 1945. During her time at St. Edward’s, Angela was also a Cadet Nurse but was not called to active duty because the war ended almost immediately after she became an R.N.

Angela worked as an R.N. for many decades, mostly at the VA. She began at the Tucson VA, spent many years at the Bronx VA, and then her final year before retirement at the Montrose VA.

Angela gave of herself to everyone. She began by giving of herself to her two sick younger brothers, then patients, then her husband (especially after his injuries on the railroad), and her son. She gave and gave to others all her life.

Angela is survived by her husband of 66 years, David; son David (Cynthia); grandson Christopher (Cassandra); and great-grandchildren Mary, Peter, Therese, and John.

My sister and I had the privilege of meeting and spending some time with Mrs. Spellman. I loved her smile and twinkle in her eyes every time we talked about nursing, and her family, especially her husband and son. Her smile was amazing when she looked at the pictures of all her grandchildren.
She was a lovely lady. My sister and I will miss her.

Ann I will miss seeing your smile every week day when I came to the NYSVHM to visit with my dad. You and Mr. Spellman were usually sitting nearby and it was always great to see you and your smile. I also loved seeing all the pictures of you that Mr. Spellman was so proud to show. You will be missed by all
