Charles G O'Dell Jr.

Charles G. O’Dell, Jr., a resident at the NY State Veteran’s Home in Montrose, NY, passed away on August 18, 2026. He was 102 years old. “Chuck” was a lifelong area resident. He was born on February 14, 1924 in Verplanck, NY to the late Charles G. O’Dell, Sr. and Ellen Rist. He served proudly in the United States Navy as part of the Seabees Unit during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific theatre in the Philippines, Marianas Islands, Aleutian Islands and Okinawa. He was called back into the service at the start of the Korean War, serving again in the Philippines and South Korea.

At the conclusion of his military service, he returned home and worked for Standard Brands in Buchanan, the Town of Cortlandt Highway Department and Hudson Valley Petroleum Products, retiring from there in 1986.

Chuck enjoyed traveling, making numerous trips across the US in his retirement, He also enjoyed going “back home” to Ireland to visit relatives.

Almost on a daily basis he enjoyed taking his newspaper and coffee down to the Steamboat Dock in Verplanck where he would sit and take in the view of the Hudson River. His favorite pastime though was just being around the family, enjoying the grandchildren and, later, the great grandchildren.

He is survived by his son Terry and his wife Pat, three granddaughters, Erin (Jim) Kieran, Stefanie (Marco) Oliveira, Andrea (James) Schaber and three great granddaughters, Kayla Kieran, Mackenzie Kieran and Shea Oliveira

He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Sally (Celestine), a sister, Rose Ellen Rudy and a brother, William O’Dell.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, August 23rd from 4-8pm at Edward F Carter Funeral Home, 170 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY 10548. A gathering will be held on Monday, August 24th at the funeral home at 10am before the procession to Rose Hills Memorial Park, 100 Mill Road, Putnam Valley, NY 10579 at 11:30am for a graveside service with military honors.
