Darrell Dwyer was my husband and life partner for over 60 years. He was brilliant and astonishingly well read. He especially loved history, nature and science, He always amazed me with his depth of knowledge on so many things. He was kind, gentle and thoughtful always finding ways to reach out to others. He kept me centered, balanced and surrounded with love.
Our first date was Darrell’s High School Senior Prom. We were inseparable from then on, making sure our colleges were close to each other. We married immediately after I graduated from College. Darrell went on to get a Masters degree with Honors in Psychology from Pace University.
Darrell was a School Psychologist in the Haldane Central School in Cold Spring, NY for 27 years working with children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Darrell's dedication to those young people shone like a beacon in the district. After retiring, he maintained a private practice continuing his special relationships with past and present students.
Darrell's love of the Hudson River was well-reflected in his knowledge of the history of this mighty, tidal estuary. Sailing was a big part of that admiration. Darrell and I competitively raced our various “Mad Hatter” sailboats from the late 1970’s on.
Darrell loved dogs and trained many, but particularly Australian Cattle Dogs. They all excelled in Agility, Nosework, and Obedience. He was very proud of them and really enjoyed showing them off to visitors while walking in Cold Spring. His favorite trick was having the dogs jump onto fire hydrants and balance. He was always asked about them and so enjoyed doing trick shows for people.
Darrell was also a very experienced scuba diver. His adventures took him all over the Caribbean and to the Galapagos Islands.
Darrell’s favorite endeavor was cooking. Our dinners every night were culinary masterpieces. He loved to feed our friends. His chef-level meals for our visitors, and lunches for our crew on our boats were legendary.
My love for Darrell is infinite. Love never dies. Darrell is with me forever.
