Donald “Corky” Duncan was born in New York City in 1929 and became a true citizen of the world. He quietly (and not so quietly) broke barriers--whether it was being one of the first integrated classes at the prestigious Music & Art High School (now known as LaGuardia), attending Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, training troops in elite weapons during his military career--which took him to Korea, Japan, and Europe-- earning his Masters Degree at Cal Poly University or being one of the first Black probation officers hired in San Luis Obispo County California, where he lived for over 40 years.
He was an accomplished musician, playing piano and French horn, a great sketch artist, a wonderful writer and photographer. A social butterfly, he enjoyed meeting and making friends with people of all backgrounds and lived to laugh.
In addition to working as a probation officer, he also took great pride in being an instructor of African History and African American Studies. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 55 years, Jeanette, daughter Andréa, son-in-law Jeff, grandkids Trevor and Estelle and all that knew and loved him.
But as he always said, “When angels travel, the weather’s always good.”
