Johanna Kovacs of Croton-on-Hudson, NY passed away on August 30, 2018 at the age of 81. Johanna was born to Istvan Harangozo and Maria Teklits on May 30, 1937 in Hungary.
She emigrated to New York in the early 1960s, to escape the hardships that followed the Hungarian uprising of 1956. In New York, she met and married Istvan Kovacs at St Stephen’s of Hungary Church, and became very active in the Hungarian community of NYC.
After moving to Croton-on-Hudson in the early 70’s, Johanna, a devout Catholic, became a parishioner at St. Christopher’s Church in Buchanan, NY. She was active in the choir and taught CCD. She was also a substitute teacher at St. Patrick’s School and spent time as a Boy Scout Den Mother. Johanna is survived by her beloved husband Istvan Kovacs and her cherished sons Steve Kovacs and Peter Kovacs.
The Funeral Mass for Johanna will be celebrated at 10am on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at St. Christopher’s Church, Buchanan, NY. The committal is private.
