Jose was born November 9, 1936 in Havana, Cuba, to Juan and Victoria DeLaBarrera. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 9 years old and settled in New York City, where he was raised along with his sister Victoria (Minina) and brother Franklyn. He officially became a citizen of the United States in 1961.
Jose joined the United States Air Force in 1954, were he served as an Aircraft Hydraulic Mechanic, and was honorably discharged in 1962. He often shared stories of the locations where he had been stationed: California, Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan and Korea. He still remembered the smell of the tropical flowers when he landed in Hawaii. Jose was an Air Tool Mechanic at General Motors in Tarrytown for 33 1/2 years.
On August 16, 1958 Jose married Milsa Noemi Perdomo. Together they raised two children, Joseph and Melissa. Jose was an avid outdoorsman and he passed his passion for hunting and fishing onto his son. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family. He had a witty sense of humor and was highly intuitive. He was known for his kindness, generosity and overall big heart. He was a loving man who absolutely adored his wife. The love they shared was second to none. For 62 years they lived their relationship like two teenagers who had just fallen in love. Always holding hands and showering one another with love and affection. He was a loving, supportive and dedicated father and grandfather. He had a beautiful soul and he was blessing to all who knew and loved him.
Jose was predeceased by his father Juan, his mother Victoria and his sister Victoria (Minina) Cosio. Jose is survived by his wife, Milsa, his son Joseph and wife Theresa, his daughter Melissa, his six grandchildren: Amanda, Brittany, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Juliana and Derek and his brother Franklyn DeLaBarrera.
