Martin passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025 at the age of 93 at NY Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. He was born in Brooklyn on February 28, 1932 and was the eldest of four children born to the late Joseph and Martha (Jakubauski) Povilonis.
Growing up, Martin spent his spare time doing small jobs like getting ice for the neighborhood “ice boxes” (refrigerators) or jumping on a truck to work for the day in New Jersey in order to earn extra money for his family. He enjoyed hanging with his friends at Coney Island sitting under the boardwalks collecting coins that might drop through the planks and watching the pretty girls walk by. He was always grateful that he survived Polio as a teenager. His family moved to Montrose where he met his life-long sweetheart Marion Elizabeth Haight. They married on April 24, 1954 and were happily married for 71 years.
He worked at Valeria Home as a cook. He also cleaned at night for the Water Dept, Post office and the local bank in the evenings and was later employed as a Custodian at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary, Furnace Woods Elementary and Blue Mountain Middle School where he retired in 1991. He was a life member of Cortlandt Engine Company No, 1 in Montrose where he served as Captain of the Fire Police. He was also a life member of Catholic Kolping Society in Montrose.
Martin loved his family more than anything. He enjoyed playing his harmonica, whistling with a smile and yodeling for his kids and grandkids. He also enjoyed spending his spare time fishing, crabbing, gardening, playing slot machines and hanging out with his buddies at the Montrose Fire Department where he was known as “Lucky Marty”. He was a very gracious and well-mannered man and never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Martin’s quote: “I’ve lived a good life and I have no regrets!”
He is survived by his wife Marion, his four children Deborah (Michael) Mullarkey, Martin Povilonis Jr, Richard (Linda) Povilonis and Diane (John) Gale, and his sister Kathleen (Gerald) Kosilla, He will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren Patrick, Sean, Nicholas, Missy, Rose, Tasha, Joseph, Amy, Michael and Sarah. He will also be missed by many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, his friends and members of the Montrose Fire Department.
Martin was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Martha, sister Lorraine Albanese and brother Joseph.
