Richard Julius Stein, of Peekskill, NY passed away suddenly on Monday, January 3, 2022 at the age of 76. Richard was born to the late Julius and Wanda (Knizeski) Stein on August 7, 1945 in Peekskill, NY. He met his beloved wife Kathryn Mitchell while attending Hendrick Hudson High School and they married in April 1968. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the New York Institute of Technology. Richard worked as a building inspector for both Tarrytown and Peekskill during his career.
Rich (aka Grandpa/PopPop) loved his family with his huge heart. He was always working on something in his basement shop. His proudest accomplishment was designing & building the family’s cabin in the Adirondack Mountains using lumber he salvaged from the old Fleischmann's Distillery in Peekskill. This was a lifelong project that he was so proud of and enjoyed often with his family and friends. He enjoyed travelling with his family throughout the United States and Canada. Rich also enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking in the outdoors. He volunteered for the Peekskill homeless shelter and was a member of the NY Forrest Owners Association. He enjoyed helping his family with construction and building advice and he was often called upon to help move or do a family home inspection through the years.
Grandpa/PopPop especially enjoyed raising his sons and was very supportive and always attended their life events. His 4 grandchildren brought him the greatest joy and gave him the opportunity to teach them about the outdoors.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathryn Stein; by his cherished sons Adam Stein (Terryann) and Michael Stein (Shera); by his adored grandchildren Marissa, Mitchell, Jacob, and Marshall; and by his canine pal Penny. Rich is also survived by many caring in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Regina Stephens.
A Celebration of his life will be held for Richard at a later date. Services are under the care of Edward F. Carter Funeral Home.
