A lifelong Buchanan resident, Bob is survived by his sons Steven Stein, Robert Stein Jr., and Kenneth Callander; his brother Joseph Stein of Pennsylvania and sister Audrey Greco of Oregon; and the daughter he never had, Tracey Powell.
He was a graduate of Hendrick Hudson High School in 1946, where he was President of his class. Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as Sergeant. After his discharge, he would marry his beautiful wife Joan and raise four sons: Robert Jr., Steven, Thomas and Kenneth.
Bob was the Vice President of the Carpenter’s Union. A dedicated member of his community, he served as the longest member of the Buchanan Engine Company for 75 years; and lifelong parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church and St. Patrick’s Church. He was also loyal member to the Buchanan Senior Citizens.
Bob enjoyed playing horseshoes and golf, and loved watching sports, especially the New York Yankees. He was recognized for his outstanding woodworking craftsmanship, which you can find displayed around local businesses. After Church on Saturdays, he would enjoy dinner at his favorite eatery, The Paradise Restaurant in Verplanck, NY. Bob was very well known for his clever jokes and witty sense of humor.
He is further survived by his Grandchildren Steven Stein Jr., Thomas Stein Jr., Ashley (Stein) Mastroddi and Zachary Stein; his Great-Grandchildren Evelyn Mastroddi, Luca Mastroddi, Lauren Stein, Brooke Stein, Tommy Stein and Mikaylah Stein.
He is predeceased by his wife Dolores, son Thomas Stein, Brother Francis Stein, and parents Joseph F. Stein and Anna M. Stein.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from the hours of 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home at 170 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY 10548.
