Walter was born May 31, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY to William and Minna Postel. In his early years his family moved to Woodhaven, Queens, where they opened a German delicatessen. Aside from delivering orders with his brother, Herbert, he greatly enjoyed a daily snack of Yankee Doodles and Pepsi-Cola from the deli. ( A favorite that continued in his diet for his entire life!) Walter graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School and after a few odd jobs landed a position with Con Edison. He met the love of his life, Janet, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, whom he married on December 27, 1960. Walter and Janet moved to Montrose, NY, in the summer of 1969 with their children Eric and Nancy. After retirement (40+ years he worked for Con Edison!) Walter enjoyed spending time with neighbors and church friends, fishing, reading, traveling the world with Janet, participating in Con Ed retiree events and most importantly he loved being “Pop” to his three grandchildren.
Walter is predeceased by his wife, Janet, and his brother Herbert. He is survived by his son, Eric Postel, his daughter, Nancy Postel Lustyik, son-in-law Michael Lustyik, and his grandchildren Ryan (Elizabeth), Nicholas, and Abigail Lustyik.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 197 Manville Rd, Pleasantville, NY 10570 or The Hendrick Hudson Free Library, 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY 10548.
