

Julie Chiu-Turnbull was born in China and raised in Taiwan. She was a bright student who was admitted to Taipei’s prodigious First Girls High School where she later taught briefly. She graduated from National Taiwan University and was awarded full scholarships to the University of Texas and the University of Illinois for her graduate work. She remained in the United States and became a citizen. Julie practiced in mental health clinics in Illinois and moved to California to join the Riverside County Office of Education as a speech and language pathologist. She also taught at several colleges as a linguistic and English language instructor.
She married Alfred Turnbull in April, 1991 and after her retirement they traveled often in this country, in Europe and Asia. She frequently surprised people by speaking in their national language.
She took voice lessons and engaged her high soprano voice singing in several church choirs and with the Moreno Valley Master Chorale.
Julie unexpectedly passed away a month past her 85th birthday on March 22, 2024, from complications of a surgical procedure. She is survived by her husband, sisters: Margie Tang, Mo-Lan Hou, and brothers: Harrison, Eric, and E.D. along with many nieces, nephews and good friends.
Julie Chiu-Turnbull was a wise, generous person who will be remembered and missed by those who loved her.
