Ruben grew up in Moreno Valley, California. From a young age, he discovered his love for sports and the camaraderie that came with them. He began with T-ball and baseball in elementary, then soccer during middle school. In high school, he discovered a passion for cross country and track and field. It was during these four years that he created lasting friendships and countless memories.
Ruben graduated in 2021 from Valley View High School and although his brothers often teased him that he only graduated with honors and not as a top scholar, he managed to earn Athlete of the Year, something he was very proud of. In the fall of 2021, Ruben began a new chapter in his life at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with the aspiration of becoming an industrial engineer. During his time at SLO he joined the running club and found an interest in weight lifting. It was also during this time that he decided to join the Marine Corps as an infantry officer. Ruben was looking forward to beginning his training in the summer of 2023.
Those of us who got to experience Ruben, know that he enjoyed a good laugh and was always making jokes. He always seemed to know what to say to cheer someone up or get a crowd going. Ruben was always up for an adventure, whether far or near. It was this desire to explore that took him up Mt. Whitney and on several backpacking trips. A good challenge was always welcomed, but so was helping others along the way. Ruben was also very fond of food, especially his carne asada fries or a good mango. Last, but not least, we know how much pride Ruben took in his hair (thank goodness for Suavecito).
Ruben is survived by his parents Marcos and Alma Diaz and his three siblings Ricardo Diaz, Marcos Diaz and Maya Diaz.
