Adelheid Mankel Fischer

Mrs. Adelheid “Adelaide”, “Adele”, “Heidi” Mankel Fischer, a longtime resident of Grace Ridge Retirement Community, died Saturday, March 26th 2011. Her husband, Mr. Willard H. Fischer, preceded her in death on Friday, February 23rd 2001. Due to the distance and Mrs. Fischer’s inability to travel, she lovingly secured his cremated remains in Morganton until her death so that they could be buried together in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in New Jersey.

Mr. and Mrs. Fischer were also longtime residents of Heritage Village in Southbury, Connecticut.

No services will be held in Morganton, NC by the family.

Graveside services at the family plot in New Jersey will be held at a later date. Grace Martin, their Goddaughter, of Leonia, NJ, will be responsible for the care and graveside arrangements of Mr. and Mrs. Fischer upon their arrival in New Jersey.

After the interment, a memorial luncheon will be held at the same Inn Mr. and Mrs. Fischer celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Family and Friends will be invited to show photos of “The Golden Anniversary” and to reminisce. The family in North Carolina will gather at the home of Roger and Patricia’s in Lake Norman for a luncheon and to share their times together, especially all the Holiday Season celebrations that were held throughout the years. Photos and cherished memories will also be honored.

Mr. Fischer was a manufacture of children’s wear. He honorably served his country in both the European Theater during WWII and Korean war. He was gone from home for two and a half years. Mr. Fischer was injured at the Normandy Landings on D-Day and was shipped to a hospital in Scotland. Doctors thought they would have to remove his toes, but excellent care avoided this from happening.

Mrs. Fischer was Director of Publicity for Hammacher Schlemer. Upon her retirement, she studied Floral Design and Arranging. She later lectured to women’s clubs and taught them the art, which many of her students continue today.
