Mr. BENJAMIN GLENN CALDWELL, affectionately nicknamed "Doby" was born in Morganton, NC on April 10, 1948, to the late Catherine Brittain Caldwell and Pinkney Caldwell, Jr. On the quiet afternoon of March 27, 2022, Doby peacefully transitioned into eternal rest at UNC Healthcare System - Blue Ridge in Morganton. Benjamin's early childhood was in Morganton, and brief period in Shelby, NC and late teens and early adulthood in Brooklyn, NY. As an early teen he was baptized at St. Paul Community A.M.E.Z. Church, New York City, NY. During his early life, he was a devoted member of St. Paul where he regularly attended worship of the Lord and participated in Sunday School. He relished portraying biblical characters during his young adulthood and engaged in other ministries. He enjoyed singing tenor in the junior choir and also served as an usher while at St. Paul. He is a member of Morganton's St. Luke's Church of Opportunity, where Bishop Aaron S. Hooper is pastor.
The educational primer was The Boys High School in Brooklyn, NY, 1964-1968, after which he was inducted into the U.S. Army in New York City, NY. He served an honorable term as a fire fighter at Fort Benjamin Harrison Army base in Indiana. While loyally serving his Country, he also attended classes which readied him for a career in business technology. After departure from the military, he was prepared to work in a leadership position and was employed at IBM in Brooklyn, NY. Doby was also a licensed plumber and operated an independent transportation service. In 1988 he returned to his hometown of Morganton and worked at Case Farms Poultry industry as well as handyman for Dr. Sardor M. Shah Khan for many years.
Distinguished by dimples and a humble smile, Benjamin's free spirit and sense of humor would light up a room. Many regaled that he was a " salt of the earth good person", reliable and dependable, doing anything he was requested to do. He prided himself in attending to the needs of the homeless and elderly residents in the community. Benjamin had a passion for, cooking soul food, fishing, dancing, and gardening. Most important on his priority list was spending time with his family. He would cheerfully and freely give his only shirt off his back to whomever needed it. He is deeply loved by his family and friends, as that was what he gave from the core of his essence, which was demonstrated through many sincere and benevolent acts of kindness.
Surviving are those who were blessed by his light, including sisters, Dr. Mary Caldwell-Foster, of Durham, NC and Helena (William) Parks, of Morganton, Two Nephews; Derrick Caldwell, Willie Bell, five Great- Nephews; Aaron Paris Caldwell, Wesley Patterson, Michael Caldwell, Braxton Shade, Nicholas Bell, three Great-Nieces; Payton Caldwell, Aysia Bell, and Aniya Bell, Kaitlynn Bell, and one Great-Great Niece, Nyomii Bell and a host of other beloved relatives and friends too numerous to count.
