
He was born on July 17, 1938 to the late Iney Irene Conley. He graduated high school at Olive Hill High School in Morganton. After graduation, he proudly served his country by joining the US Navy on April 13, 1955 as a boiler room operator. He served on the USS W. Keith (DD-775) before being honorably discharged on April 12, 1963. Cliff received his education at Western Piedmont Community College with degrees in Criminology and Auto Mechanics. He worked for the Department of Corrections, then later worked for the City of Morganton where he was a waste water treatment operator until his retirement.
He was a member of Shiloh AME Church, Morganton and served as a Trustee under the leadership of Rev. H.S. Williams.
Cliff was preceded in death by his wife Vivian Caldwell Corpening and his two sons, Gregory L. Corpening and Clifton H. Corpening, Jr. Also preceding him in death, seven sisters and eight brothers.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Vickie Corpening Brown of Forest City and Deborah A. Corpening of Morganton, a brother Assim Rasheed (Jake), three grandchildren Clifton H. Corpening III of Longview, TX, La'Porscha Caldwell of Lexington, NC and James Jones of Longview, TX, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
