

He was a proud graduate of the University of Florida, earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Construction Management.
He started his career in Minnesota as a Lumber Yard Manager. Then, after moving to Florida, he had his own residential construction company for 11 years. After moving to North Carolina, he worked as a General Superintendent with Matthews Construction before starting his own company, Vegter Builders, with his son.
He returned to Matthews Construction to finish out his career, where he retired in June 2021. He enjoyed many hours tinkering in his workshop and tending to the fields, garden, and chickens on the property. Not only did he work fulltime but he also spent the last 17 years renovating his current home. He was known for his fierce work ethic and incredible strength and stamina.
Ed was married to his wife, Mary Vegter, for almost 45 years. They were truly each other’s best friends and were inseparable. Ed missed her immensely every single day, as she passed away a short 3 and ½ months before him on July 11.
He was extremely proud of his family, and leaves behind nothing but beautiful memories. He is survived by his son, Sam Vegter (Kimberly), of Hickory; his daughter, Holly Mauldin (Brian), of Connelly Springs; his daughter, Josie Vegter, of Charlotte; and his grandchildren Hunter Mauldin, Grant Mauldin, Cady Mauldin, Lucy Vegter, Abby Vegter, Britt Mauldin and Emmett Vegter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Vegter; his parents, Harry and Theresa Vegter; and his brother-in-law, Ray Cook.
A memorial service for Edward will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Faith Presbyterian Church, 605 Bost Rd., Morganton, NC 28655. with Pastor Mike Thompson officiating. A reception will follow the memorial service and a separate private burial for family will occur at a later date.
The Vegter Family has entrusted Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton with arrangements.
