He was born on March 24, 1947 to the late Harrison Phifer Abernethy and Allie Ann Bowman Abernethy in Burke County, North Carolina.
Rick was a proud veteran of the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion, Post 234.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters, Charlotte Abernethy and Sandra Heavner; brothers, James "Bo" Abernethy and Alan "Monk" Abernethy.
Those left to cherish his memory is his brothers, Paul Lynn Abernathy (wife, Cathie) and Charles "Pete" Abernethy (wife, Sharon); and numerous nieces and nephews.
