He was born to the late James Bud Bates and Geneva Honeycutt.
James loved racing, fishing and listening to music.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Jamie and wife Christi and Heather Bates, grandchildren; Zachary Bates, Jaylen Johnson, Mason, Memphis, Alayhia Bates, Calleigh, Braydon and Kimyia.
A Celebration of Life will be held privately.
