Mary Boggs Alexander

Mary was born to Harry and Louise Walton Boggs at the family home, Creekside, in Morganton. She was one of six children.

Mary was a lifelong member of Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton, which she loved dearly. She was the first female Senior Warden of the Vestry and served as a member of the Altar Guild for over thirty-six years, acting as its co-chair for over twenty years. She also taught Sunday School there. Mary was a member of the Quaker Meadows Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and served as its regent from 1993-1995.

She loved gardening, reading, collecting antiques, enjoying a glass of wine, and her pet dachshunds. Mary was an excellent cook known for her asparagus with cheese sauce which appeared regularly at holiday meals. There were few crossword puzzles that she could not master, and she rarely failed to discover the villain in any murder mystery she read. She will be remembered as a person who loved her family, her church, and the beauty of nature.

Mary is survived by two children, Mary Braun and Louisa Emmons, both of Morganton, three grandchildren, Major Cory Braun and wife Samantha of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Mary Faye Lyle of Phoenix, Arizona, and Alex Emmons of Morganton. Great-grandchildren are Zachary and Jack Braun of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. She is also survived by sisters Clara Glaze of Isle of Palms, SC, Eliza Kirk of Morganton, and Florence Smith of Summerville, SC, plus numerous nieces and a nephew.

She is pre-deceased by her husband of forty-five years, Joseph Alexander, her brother Herbert Boggs, and sister Ariail Wood.
