Ralph Junior Houser

December 10, 1946 – September 11, 2026

Ralph Junior Houser, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 79 years old.

Ralph was a man of deep and abiding faith. His faith was not something he simply professed—it was something he lived. It shaped the way he loved his family, cared for his friends, treated strangers, and showed up for those who needed him. He was at peace with his passing, comforted by knowing he was going home to the Lord he loved and trusted so deeply.

Ralph and his wife, Karen, built a beautiful life together, one rooted in faith, family, resilience, laughter, and a determination to find joy in the little things. They were blessed with three children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Ralph took tremendous pride in his family and was their biggest cheerleader, trusted confidant, and source of wisdom. He made it a priority to truly know each of them and to help guide them in life and in their faith.

Ralph was a faithful and active member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Hickory and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6451. He found true brothers in Cursillo, a community of men who gathered to deepen their relationship with Christ and support one another in faith.

His faith naturally overflowed into service. For many years, Ralph and Karen created and shared what he called “Manifesting Love.” Ralph would receive prayer requests from family, friends, and even strangers, compose a personal prayer for each person or situation, and pray for them daily. During COVID, he began writing a prayer each day, eventually creating a collection that became a book. As his mobility declined, his cards became his way of continuing to share prayer, encouragement, kindness, and love. Whether at a drive-thru, the bank, or a hospital, Ralph often had a pocket full of cards to give away.

He also served his community through the Keep Christ in Christmas program, his own backpack drive, and many years as St. Nicholas. He was the perfect Santa—jovial, kind, gentle, and certainly looked the part—and became affectionately known as Santa Pa.

Ralph proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969 in Internal Communications. He later enjoyed a long career in retail management with Kmart and CVS, where he was known for creating a fun and welcoming environment for employees and customers. He was also very proud of his accomplishments with Toastmasters.

But perhaps what people will remember most was his smile, his humor, his kindness, and the way he made people feel loved and valued. Ralph believed in standing firm in your convictions, doing the right thing even when it wasn't popular, loving your family fiercely, and freely giving the love you have received.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Karen Houser; sons, Boyd Houser (Paula) and Patrick Houser (Delia); daughter, Katie Houser Tocci (Matt); grandchildren, Kyle Houser (Dani), Nicholas Houser (Jenn), Jacob Houser (Taylor), Anthony Tocci, Geneva Maynard, Christopher Tocci, Aemillia Houser, and Caroline Tocci; great-grandchildren, Gloria Houser, Grace Houser, Owen Houser, Eden Houser, and Andrew Houser; sister, Linda Baker (Lonnie); and many beloved extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillie Muriel LeFevers Houser and Ralph Houser, and his father-in-law, Robert Joseph Walker.

Ralph leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, friendship, and love. His family finds comfort knowing that the man who spent his life blessing others is now home with the Lord he served so faithfully. The family encourages those who knew Ralph to honor his memory by doing what he did so well: share a little love, say a prayer for someone who needs it, make someone laugh, and let the ripples flow.

A visitation and receiving of friends will be held Wednesday, September 16, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 921 2nd St. NE, Hickory, NC 28601, followed by a Funeral Mass at 3:00 p.m. An ice cream sundae party and celebration of Ralph’s life will follow the funeral in Holy Family Hall.

A committal ceremony with Military Honors will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US Hwy 70, Black Mountain, NC 28711, Thursday, September 17, at 12:00 p.m.
