Verdell James Corpening

Verdell James Corpening age 77, of Morganton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Born August 21, 1933 in Burke County, he was the son of the late Grady and Lucille Corpening. Verdell was a longtime member of the Hartland Church of God, where he served as a member of the usher board, and the deacon board of the church. Verdell also served on the board of directors of the Chesterfield Fire Department. Verdell was employed at Drexel Heritage for 43 years and served as a Supervisor for over 20 years.

Verdell was a loving husband, a dear friend and a devoted father. He was married to Janice Wakefield Corpening for the past 57 years. Those left behind to cherish to his memory include four generations of family, seven children; three sons Kelvin Corpening, and Verdell A. Corpening of Morganton, Keith Corpening of Charlotte. His four daughters include Sandra Walker of Wake Forest, Kathy Corpening, Karla Conley both of Morganton, and Vanessa Smith and husband Louis of Lawrenceville GA. 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild; also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Verdell is preceded in death by his sister, Jean Pearson.

Funeral services will be held at Hartland Church of God on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 3:00PM with Reverend Venoy Pearson and Eugene Kincaid officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.
