Biography

Cathy Ann Southerland was born in Morristown, and raised in Russellville by James Leland Johns and Florence Marie Wilder Johns with her younger sister, Shirley Wilson.
Cathy attended Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where she was shown the example of being a Christian. During her youth, she dedicated her life to God and became a member of the church.
She spent much of youth reading books, and spending time with her sister and cousins that lived down the road; Ronnie, Linda and Glenda Majors.
In the third Grade she met Rhonda Adams and, now husband, Benny Rhoads. This friendship would continue on through her entire life… Raising their children, Motorcycle riding, and even going on vacations together.
While in high school, Cathy started work at Rose’s. It was there she met her husband of 45 years, Frank Southerland.
On March 23, 1974, Cathy and Frank were married by Darryl Seals at Cedar Creek Baptist Church.
Cathy became a mother on May 25, 1976 to James Kevin Southerland, and again on July 25, 1980 to Cheri Dena Moore. She experienced the great joy of becoming a mamaw on February 25, 2004 to Cody Moore, again on August 8, 2005 to Jolee Southerland, and lastly on November 30, 2011 to Caitie AnnMarie Moore, who carries on Cathy’s middle name. Her kids and grandkids were her everything.
Cathy was employed at Magnavox, Howmet, and Timet before investing in her passion and obsession, flowers and dolls. She opened her own shop, Rose Petals Florist and Dolls, on Old Kentucky Road with the assistance of her good friend, Beverly Ratliff Estes. Cathy would end her career path by being a retail clerk at Goody’s, starting retirement in March 2017.
Cathy and Frank often traveled, with her favorite vacations being to Myrtle Beach, Daytona Beach, Tybee Island, Charleston, Disney, and an Alaskan Cruise. Cathy enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a huge fan of Harley Davidson. Because of this passion Cathy and Frank shared, they made many friends to plan rides with: Chris and Melissa Hall, Steve and Lisa Nunn, Kevin and Kim Nelson, John and Brenda Lowry, Jason Moore, Katie West, and Craig Seals.
Cathy was a person everyone fell in love with, which led to her having many friends. Some of whom are Todd and Amy Hemminger, Vic and Connie Trobaugh, Paul McKinney and Lizzie Ward Minnix, with her closest friends being Jane and Paul Lukovics.
Anytime she passed a yardsale, she had to turn around and look for treasure. She was known for her great skill of finding a good deal, and making sure to pass the secrets on to her family.
Cathy also loved Yorkshire Terriers, especially her Yorkie, Corkie.
Cathy passed at UT Hospital on May 8, 2019, but will be remember for the great life she lived.
She is loved and will be missed daily, but we rejoice in knowing she is with her Lord and Savior.
