April 19, 1962 - Jan. 23, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Captain John Mark Long, a beloved brother, uncle, Veteran and public servant, who departed this life on Jan. 23, 2026.
Born and raised in Morristown, TN, Mark was known for his unwavering dedication to others, his generous spirit, and his deep love for family and community. A devoted Christian, he loved life and loved Christ, and he cherished his church; Russellville Baptist Church, where he faithfully served on the security team. Mark had a gift for comforting others-he always seemed to have the right words to say, no matter the moment.
Before beginning his long career in law enforcement, Mark proudly served in the US Army, carrying with him the discipline, loyalty, and sense of duty that would define his life's work.
Mark joined the Richmond Hill Police department in 1986 and served for more than three decades, retiring in 2017 as Captain. His leadership, mentorship, and commitment to public safety left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Mark was more than his uniform-he was a man with a big heart, a warm smile, and a presence that made people feel seen and valued. He adored his dogs, Tasha and Molly, "his girls"; he cherished time with his nieces and nephews, and held close bonds with his sisters and brother. After retiring and moving back to his hometown, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his special nephew: Tom Long and close friend Gary Lowe.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Albert and Nancy Long, whose guidance shaped the man he became. Brother-in-law: Alan Kinser and sister-in-law: Joyce Long.
He is survived by his siblings: Brenda Kinser; Becky (Chris) Majors and brother: Doug Long; as well as his beloved nieces and nephews. Their memories of him will remain a source of comfort and pride.
Captain Long's legacy of service-as a soldier, and officer, a man of faith, and a soul of deep compassion-will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, church community and all who were blessed to know him.
Receiving of friends will be on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Stubblefield Funeral Home. Masonic services will begin at 6:00 pm with a funeral service to follow.
Family and friends will gather in Hamblen Memory Gardens on Friday, Jan. 30 at 11:00 am for a graveside service.
