Mary Jane Chambers, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2026. She was born in Asheville, NC to Earl and Mary Moses, the seventh of nine children. The family moved to the Morristown area when Jane was a small child.
She married Robert Chapman in 1955, and had a daughter in 1956. The family moved to Tazewell, VA where they lived until Robert died tragically in a car accident. Widowed, with a small child, Jane moved to Cleveland, Tennessee and enrolled at Lee College to pursue a teaching degree. She obtained her Associates Degree and moved back to Morristown and attended Carson Newman College, finishing her Bachelor of Education degree. She would go on to receive two Masters degrees from the University of Tennessee and Union College. She spent 30 years teaching in Hamblen County schools at Southern Heights, West View Middle, Lincoln Elementary, and Alpha Elementary. She is remembered as a tough, but well-loved teacher.
Jane remarried in 1968 to James Clayton Chambers. They spent 48 years enjoying traveling and spending time with family and friends. Much of their energies were spent in lay ministry as Sunday School teachers, choir members and leaders at the Morristown Church of God, Compassion Church and The Avenue. Jane was one of the first members of the Avenue Prayer team where she served faithfully until her death. One of her last acts before she went into the hospital was to make entries into her prayer journal for the needs of others.
