Mary Velle Hillhouse

Mary “Sammy” N. Hillhouse, born February 6, 1936, passed away surrounded by the love and memories of those who knew her. She was the beloved wife of the late Joe Hillhouse, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Karen Parson, and her grandson, Sean Quinn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her daughter, Sheila; and her granddaughter, Fionna.

Mary was one of thirteen children born to Rufus and Hulda Mae Neal. She was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters: Isaac, David, Herman, Jack, Jim, George “Goose,” Stella, Tine, Ina, Cora, Joann, and Yvonne.

For more than 40 years, Mary was employed by Southern Auto Electric. After her retirement, she remained active and enjoyed staying busy.

Before her health began to decline, Mary found great joy in her church life and the fellowship she shared with her church family at Ash Street Baptist Church. She also had a special love for old Western movies, especially those starring her favorite actor, John Wayne.

Mary will be remembered for the life she shared with her family, her devotion to those she loved, and the many memories she leaves behind. She was deeply loved and will be forever missed.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the chapel of Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Directors at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.

Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
