Retha married Jimmy D. Mitchell on 12/29/69 in East Point, Georgia. They shared many happy years together.
She was preceded in death by her father, Martin Smith Ledford; her mother, Pauline Thomason; her brothers, Charles Ledford, Wayne Ledford, and Blayne Ledford; and her sister, Blanche.
She is survived by her spouse, Jimmy Mitchell; her children, Danny, Michael, and Kevin; her six grandchildren, Alyssa McGlothlin, Justin Mitchell, Christopher Mitchell, Jacob Mitchell, Lezlee Mitchell, and Jeremiah Mitchell; her sibling, Raymond Ledford; and seven great-grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Retha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose steady care for others shaped the rhythm of her days. Her faith was not confined to words alone, but lived out in daily prayer and reading scripture, in gathering loved ones together on special occasions, and in a quiet, consistent commitment to serving the Lord.
For more than 40 years, Retha was an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She served wherever she was needed—often pouring and serving drinks at church functions, and faithfully leading in the children’s nursery for decades. In that ministry, she touched the lives of countless children, offering them warmth, guidance, and a lasting example of faith.
Retha carried herself with a forthright honesty—truthful, direct, and dependable. Her compassion and selflessness were evident in the way she cared for those in need, and in the reverence with which she honored the memory of family members who had gone before her, often bringing flowers so their presence would be remembered at gatherings such as family reunions. In moments of uncertainty or hardship, she had a gift for offering scripture that met the moment, drawing others toward a closer walk with the Lord.
She also found joy in time spent bowling with her family—simple hours that became cherished traditions, strengthened by her steady presence and the love she poured into those around her.
A life marked by devotion, family, and caring for others—this is Retha, our Momma Granny - Great.
